Not hard to do except getting the wire off the back drivers side bank. Kinda tight back there, but you can do it without removing any brackets. Passenger side is easy. Unclip the wire harness from the intake tube and pull a hose or two off then take the tube off the throttle body and air box. Then you can unplug the coils and take out the 10mm head bolt holding them down. It only took me about 20 minutes to replace the plugs on my 2001 a few days ago. I just bought it a few weeks ago and it had 134k miles on the original plugs. They were very worn, but still ran better than new Bosch plugs. Pesonally I recommend using NGK plugs on this motor over Denso as they don't wear as fast. I worked in a Toyota dealer for many years and have seen a lot of plugs in these. I never figured out why, but the V6 came from the factory with NGK in one bank and Denso in the other bank. There was always much more wear on the Denso's

thanks for the info I'm goin to try some E3 plugs see if they do as they say but i'd never put bosch in anything and would put ngk's in first I've owned a toyota truck with the 22re and many hondas and ngk's have always worked great.

hey chris- mini racer if you just bought a runner I highly recommend a cold air intake it helped mine alot I picked up a AEM brute force e z to install works great and you don't have to oil it like some of those other brands and if you over oil it gets sucked in to your mas air sensor and throw a wrong signal good luck with the new toy

how does the aem get cleaned toy cruzr if you don't mind me hijacking your own thread... ?

and please get some second and third opinions on the spark plugs-my forum bud toytech76 speaks highly of the densos and he knows what of he speaks. He services toyotas-for a living and is nice enough to share his professional knowledge with us.

NO offense intended to you sir-mini racer-I have run the NGKs -in other vehicles-and I believe them to be a fine product-I am just suggesting the nippodensos are highly recommended for the 3rd gen application.

cleaning AEM filters

well Ron you clean a AEM filter with a cleaning solution that either cames with the filter or you order it from any AEM dealer you just let the filter soak in the solution rinse repeat AEM recommends you do this about 50,000 miles or so more often if your in the dust and dirt. let the filter dry re install simple. you should install one on your toyota...unless your a k&n kind of guy

No offense taken Ron. I need to take some pics of the plugs I pulled out of my 2001 for you to see though. Like I said, there is a huge difference in the amount of wear between the NGK and Denso plugs. I was a Toyota tech for about 10 years, and was certified as a Toyota master diagnostic tech when I left. I have seen this difference in wear on all the original plugs I pulled out of the 5VZ-FE in that time. That said, there is nothing wrong with the Denso's, and if I was still working at the dealer I would probably use them too. Kinda hard to beat an employee discount, and having them on hand when I needed them. The only difference between the NGK and Denso is the NGK will last a bit longer if they are both the same type of plug.

I still never figured out why there were different plugs in each bank.

thanks both of you

thanks toycruzr-I did consider the AEM intake actually, I believe it is good for like 12 horsepower on the V6 and to me that is significant. I had a K&N FIPK on my 2nd gen 22RE and it opened up the breathing in an excellent way and allowed more gas pedal travel. But not too many folks recommend it for the 3rd gen application.

I went with the deckplate mod for about 6 horsepower and $20 worth of parts.

thanks miniracer and I am glad to know your qualifications. Me? I am an Accountant/Office Manager and do not pretend to know the intricacies of the modern vehicles

I believe you are implying by "wear" that the NGKs would last longer (more miles)
and that is important as well.

I look forward to your opinions/results guys and I don't get the comment or are you joking? about the different plugs in each bank .

You mean one side -3 plugs of your engine had NGKs while the other 3 had Nippodensos? That certainly could not be stock from the factory correct ?

Thanks for the help and I will check out this E3 site you mention.

Correct on both parts. They did come from the factory with different plugs in each bank. One side has NGK, the other Denso. Again I don't know why. They were like this at least untill 2002 when I left Toyota. The Denso plugs always had more wear than the NGK's.

Wow that seems real strange to me but again what would I know....

The E3s remind me of Splitfires which at first everyone thought they had to have-sort of like the oil debate, as long as they do the job....
