Remote Starter Reccomendation?

Anyone have or use a remote starter solution? My wife has offered for my birthday, and we'll most likely look at Circuity City / Best Buy. 2001 SR5, 3.4, auto, etc. etc. I would still like for my back window to work from the remote if at all possible.

Thanks in advance - Drew

I would not recomend buying it from Best Buy or Circuit City. Their prices are crazy. It would be ok to have them install it though.

Can you buy just a remote start kit or do you have to get an alarm too?

Call around to a few of the smaller shops. I'm sure you could get a better deal from them and they usually do a lot better job than CC or Bestbuy. I would recommend Compustar or anything DEI (viper, python, clifford, aviatal, hornet, etc etc.) They both make good products and offer a lifetime warranty on the product once installed my an authorized dealer.

I would prefer a Clifford or Viper system. They have added modules you can get which roll down any window you'd like, pop your doors, etc.

I just got one from my brother that he has had for a while not installed, I'll include pics.

I personally wouldn't go to Circuit City or Best Buy. Go to an Autosound place, they'll do it right. I know for a fact that BB and CC employees (my brother used to be one) slap shit together.

If you are located nearby (you don't have a location listed), I recommend Newport Autosound in Newport Beach, CA.

The add on modules to control windows, sunroofs, etc. etc. can be added to any alarm. I've had good experience's with both DEI and compustar so recommend them both. I actually have a Clifford G5 unit on my 4runner.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I called around to both CC & BB; CC was completely sold out (guess folks are getting ready for the WI winter), and BB was completely ridiculous (something like 340 + tax). After reading your suggestions, I decided to steer clear from that option.

Later on, I called a local stereo shop, $180 installed and a lifetime warranty. The took care of it today. It is a Code Alarm brand. Never heard of it, but it is lifetime, so I'm ok with that. The install is completely clean (except for a small reciever they mounted behind my rear view mirror). I've tried it like 10 times, it is so cool.

Thanks again - Drew

So did you get a new alarm and remote start or just a remote start?

$180 isn't bad.

my brother has it on his truck, one day, he let someone borrow it and they left it in gear... long story short, he had to buy an entire new front end...

lol and I had it on my old MKIII supra... I miss that car sooo much..

The $180 was installed (plus tax, ~$200), and was only the remote start. No alarm. I like the new fob better than the old one b/c ALL doors unlock with one press instead of the two required by my Toyo fob. Only thing missing is the back window rolldown button, and can't say I've ever used that one. - Drew

That's cool. So you have a new fob that controls the locks and the remote start?

Is there any way you could get a video of it working, just the remote start that is?

What kind of range does it have?

A buddy of mine tooks his 1990 chevy 4x4 lifted on 35s to BB to get some stuff put in it, not sure why. Anyway another friend of mine worked there at the time. While getting his truck out of the bay he backed over another customers car. We gave him loads of crap for that

heres a vid I just made to demonstrate it.

Basically I show you from outside, lock, unlock, and start.

From inside, start, shutoff twice.

I forget to show that if you start the car and hit a pedal without first switching the key to on, the car shuts off. You can also lock and unlock the car while the car is on so you can leave your car locked and running.

I haven't put in the power window module yet, but when I do, I will demonstrate that as well.

YouTube - Remote Start Demonstration

I just posted that vid so it might need to process...

Not bad. I've considered getting remote start (without alarm) too. I like that your new key fob unlocks/locks the doors with the addition of starting the vehicle. Other remote start key fobs I've seen didn't.

You said you'd be adding a power window module at some point in time...so how are these modules installed and how many can be added? I'm out of the loop on what all these "modules" can do and how to install them.

If I did decide on a remote start system, I'd definitely want the option to roll the rear window down.

I had a Pursuit by Audiovox installed two years ago. It has operated flawlessly, has excellent range ( I start it from a train as I pass the lot, and even from a plane once).

I read a lot on self install systems and was recommended against doing it myself.

Only downside is your mileage decreases from the increased idling time. I am happy with the trade off in cold weather though.
