2002 4Runner Rear Cargo Door Falling

My cargo door on a 2002 4 Runner won't stay up and falls about 1/3 of the way down when opened. Are there any fixes to this other than changing the actuators? And do I need to replace both or just one?

Thanks,
Jon

try to recharge the struts first

When the struts start to fail like that you may be able to rejuvenate them by manually flexing your cargo door up all the way and back down -try that for 5 or 6 times and see if they
do any better.

Otherwise-yes you may need to replace both...

Mine wont stay up when its cold out. Like below freezing. But in the summer I have no problems... kinda strange. I just live with it.

Mine drop down about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way when it's cold outside only. The exact same thing on my dad's t4R. I'll just live with it when it's cold outside. not really worth the money in my opinion to have them replaced just cause I'm annoyed for a couple months.

Guys - that's funny about them dropping when it's cold out. As that's exactly my problem, but I wanted to see the responses without mentioning that. They fall down about 1/4 of the way only when it's cold out. I'll try flexing them and see if that helps. If not, in a few months (Wisconsin) they should be fine until next winter. Then I will decide whether to replace or not - it is annoying putting the door up, than reaching inside and the door coming down on your head. Thanks Much!

I just bought the replacement gas shocks off ebay for mine and replaced them myself. Cost about 50.00.

actuators

I have not had the problem with mine here in Texas, yet, but it does not get as cold down here. I do know that most actuators respond slowly in colder temperatures, especially if lubricated by hydraulic fluid, but mostly due to the close tolerance required for them to work properly, and in extreme cold weather, the high quality steel may sometimes draw just enough to not maintain a close snug fit. Do like one of the reponders said, push it up and down a few times, this will cause enough friction heat to make them work. Replacing them will just give you a new set to push up and down, unless you have high miles, and the shaft may be worn enough anyway due to usage causing it to not stay up.
