Question timing belt failure

Season's Greetings!
I was just wonderin' did anyone have the timing belt fail ( break) while driving?
If so, at what mileage?
Thanks,
Jack

When I saw this thread, I was guessing someone had a failure. It would be interesting to see if anyone has had a failure. I have read members going 120,000, 160,000 or even more. I do wonder if there are any stories out there too.

For me, I have 110,000 and don't feel the need to change it yet.

I don't recommend it, but a buddy of mine has 230K on his original t-belt on his '98 4Runner...I keep waiting for it to go any day now.

My 2000 has 109k on it and the previous owner said he did not have it replaced. I'm trying to decide if I need to replace it. Not fun to spend the money, but not fun to be stranded in winter either!

Yes - I'm curious, I got 145K on my '98
Limited.
I spoke to my local Mech. and he says I should wait.
He just changed someone else's belt at
180k because he had to do the water pump which was leaking. But he said
the belt still look in good condition.
I don't want to spend the money if I really don't have to. I drive mostly local
short trips, so I think I'll wait till I HAVE to do it and and then do the whole shbang:
Water pump, belt, pulley bearings and seals.
So at this point ( other than regular maintenance) I've only had to replace
the starter,driver-side swaybar end link
and do the brakes twice, not bad for over 140,000 - Yeah Toyota!!

I'm waiting for my water pump to go before changing it. But if it still hasn't gone at 150k, I might change out everything for another 150k of driving!

we have a non-interference motor so if the belt were to snap, there would be no damage to your engine. worst thing that can happen is getting stranded and having to call for a tow.

Mine still running strong @ 133k

I was scared at 120k and started to read around forums and figured i should just wait. My baby is 2wd SR5 so i don't do much stunts on it so i'm sure it will last me atleast 150k before i do change it .

YT has a monster thread on TB mileage. Hundreds of posts going up to 200k. IIRC, there were only a few (3 or 4) failure reports and those generally involved coolant leakage. My own opinion is that the belt is not the most vulnerable piece behind that cover. The important thing is to get in there every now and then (every 60K after first 90-100) to check idlers, pump, tensioner, belt, and cam and crank seals--or go in at 110K-120K intervals and change everything (except I would leave seals until there is a problem.) I am at 110K and I am going to change everything as I have some squeaking and I don't want to have to go in again soon. This is all for 3.4L V6 later years with factory recommended 90K first change.

Here is link to YT thread:

the 3.4 V6 has the timing belt which needs to be changed when due. the 4 cyl models have a timing chain which should last the life of the truck without being changed.

I just did my first one over the summer at 138k miles and I was told the belt just had minor fraying but wasn't in bad shape and the WP was fine also but I had the money at the time and you can't put it off forever so when you can afford it you should do it.

You might be thinking of the new 4.0 V6 that is in the new 4Runner.

2.7 cyl in third generation, timing chain.

3.4 V6 in third generation, timing belt.

4.0 V6 in fourth generation, timing chain.

4.7 V8 in fourth generation, timing belt.
