power steering fluid leak

hi there, i have a 97 V6 (about 150K) and found out i have a small leak in one of the power steering metal pipes. I guess years of driving in the NorthEast with winter salts finally caught up to the pipe. I called in the dealer and they ran up the 2 pipes (they come together) for around $450 + about $200 for labor. So to replace the 2 metal pipes (in which i ONLY needed ONE but they said they come as a set) I have to spend about $650 ??? Seem a little too high? Has anybody have the same problem as I do and spent that much money to fix it? or anybody try to fix it themselves?

thanks

i am not quite sure what popes you are taling about, but i bet they are in the aftermarket world.

try napa, advanced auto parts, or some other local auto store b4 you go to the dealer, or even call to other shops and see whaty they charge. anything will be cheeper than the dealer

I checked everywhere and could not find these metal pipes as replacement parts. These are pipes as big as the pinky finger.

I'm so frustrated and thinking about to let my 4-runner go. It'll be hard to let her go tho. I have the 'Limited Edition' and she still looks as good as ever!

i did some quick looking on different places. the only place that i could find them was on the partznet.com they were about $338. just click on the bar at the top of the page thats were i found it. i ran into the same type problem with my rear heater lines that rotted out. they were a dealer only part. but not that expensive.

thanks! i typed 'partznet.com' on the address bar but it took me to some other site???

I tried to remove the bottom cover (front) and got three of of four screws, but one stubborn screw got stripped.
I'm thinking about cutting off the leak section and replace it with plastic hose using metal clamps but only for that stupid piece of cover, now i can't even get to the pipe to cut it.

the stripped screw is in the rear inside a recess hole. it's going to be a pain in the @$$ to get it out.
