I still can move my throttle cable by pressing my gas pedal, but you're right, the kickdown is now fully electronic since there is only one cable that goes into the TB

I checked mine and there is definitely some slack in the lines. I'm going to have to tighten those up, probably when it gets warmer though.

i dont want any more snow haha.
well for the questions about my filter....
i really dont know haha. this guy i worked with who had this sick camero told me to put it on there, because see how its all oily like, it would be shooting that oil back threw my intake, and so i cleaned the intake with some carb cleaner and put that filter on there and then had to plug the pipe that connected there before, because its a vacuum line of some sort. so far no ill side effects just a little random oil leakage from the filter.
anyone think im crazy and should take it off?

I went ahead and cleaned out the throttle body before tightening the cables. The combination of removing the gunk and taking up the slack has got my 120K rig running much better! It is was a peice of cake too!
Thanks for the idea Matthew! Great post!!!!

No, I'm not mechanically inclined. Just to get that out of the way. Where is the throttle body, how do you take it off, and how do you clean it?
Thanks.

Yes actually it will. even though it has dbw, there is still a cable that runs to the throttle body, and even though it's electronicaly controled the cable can stretch over time, so you should tighten it up if it is.

Sorry guys but the third gen of Runners never had drive by wire...
They had an electronic tranny, so no kickdown cable is needed on certain years, but they all have a mechanic throttle body...

Yeah I was gonna say, I didn't think that 4R's were DBW. Although tightening up that single cable in the 2001-2002 can achieve the same thing as tightening the three on 00- and down

I'm quite sure that 2001-2002 4Runner did have drive by wire. That's how the VSC system worked...by electronically limiting the throttle and therefore cutting power (this could not be done if there was a direct link between pedel and throttle). If you press the accelerator pedal with the engine off in 2001-2002 4Runners, you will notice that the cable link opens the butterfly only about 1/4 of the way (even if you floor it). The reason for this is that if the electronics ever failed, you could still limp to a safe place with that 1/4 turn of the butterfly using the cable link.
Here are some Yotatech threads that back this info up:
