Easy mods under $100
Ok im sick of sitting around waiting to save up for my exhaust, supercharger and fuel intake so i've been doing stupid little upgrades and take-aways and now i've hit a dead end. SO! does anyone know of some other stupid little add a hp or two things i can do, I'm sooo bored. Heres what I've already done:
-Cleaned throttle body (and adjusted cables, duh)
-Deckplate mod
-Removed intake silencer
-Removed belt driven fan and installed electric fan
-Removed A/C compressor
-Removed spare tire and trailer hitch
-Painted grille and bumpers
-Put a chrome exhaust tip i found at checkers for $5 on (like i said, im really, really bored)
I actually layed under my runner for about an hour the other night just staring at it trying to come up with something to fix or modify. !IM BORED!

Air horns (locomotive style)
Auxiliary lights (aircraft landing power)
Give it time... You'll think of some more.

Hey man...I've been trying to come up with new ideas lately...
But now you have to share:
I am a windows down in the summer kind of guy, and it helps that I live in Colorado. I NEVER use my AC. Does removing the compressor put less strain on the engine, thus better performance? What are the benefits other than just something to do?
Can you provide any technical information about this mod, or links to information? Sorry to stray from your thread, but I imagine this would be a under $100 mod...just not new to you.

Removing the A/C compressor is not going to do ANYTHING for you. When the A/C isnt on, the compressor basically functions as an idler pulley, since the clutch is dis engaged. Have you thought about how you are gonna keep the fog off of your windshield in the wintertime, or when it is raining? the window defrost uses a combination of A/C, and heat to remove the humidity(or condensation) on your windshield. At best, you will save some weight..maybe 20lbs. As i have said many times, if you bought your runner to race redlight to redlight, you bought the wrong vehicle.

ok first of all thank you everyone for your ideas, some of them are hilarious but awesome. ok scotts97T4Rltd im trying to make a race car out of my 4runner because i am a musician at heart and i wanted to be different and unique. and actually removing the a/c gave me the most noticable gain of all the minute mods. and im not going from tech data im going off of, holy crap my runner responds so much better now. also, i dont think youve ever been to CO before cause there's no such thing as humidity here, and i actually took it off because whoever had this thing before me replace the a/c with one that had the wrong clutch pack and broke two fan blades, which is why i now have an electric fan. CSL you live here in denver, ill let you drive my 4runner some time and show you how much of a difference removing the a/c makes. and though all you people may think im stupid for removing all this stuff. individualy all this crap doesnt do much but all together it makes a huge difference. Im actually going to a dyno next month to see how much hp im sittin on right now so i can see how much of a gain my bigger future upgrades make.
ya i could go buy a car but you know what, everyone and there mothers buy cars to go fast. and im trying to be unique and do something not many people have ever done before. instead of critisizing me you should be respecting my ideas and dreams, especially when you all are 4runner owners yoursleves. Im honestly sick and tired of going to bandimere speedway and seeing nothing but mustangs and camaros all day. or seeing another dumbass in a civic. I hate american cars, i hate idiots who put fart cans on their civics and think its fast. While doing all these upgrades i am trying to keep it as stock looking as i possibly can AND NO FART CAN EXHAUST TIPS! so go ahead tell me im stupid but we'll see who has the last laugh when i smoke some redneck in his corvette or run a 12 sec 1/4 mile, and all the while spending less than $20k

Matthew, everyone has dreams. Im not knocking you for that. Im just trying to put everything in perspective for you. You have some very high hopes, which is attainable with large amounts of money. You are smoking crack if you think you are going to be able to run a 12 second quarter mile for less than $20k invested. I bet our 4runners are 1500 lbs heavier than the corvette. you will have to be making 450hp at the wheels(atleast if not more) to be able to run those times. The motors are strong enough to be able to handle those amounts of power, but the drivetrain is not. You will have to upgrade the transmission, the torque converter, the rear end, the axles. These are all weak links. You are looking at basically having to beef everything up to handle the power. And........at the end of the day, even if you have $30k invested in the runner, its still only going to be worth $6,000. Thats the cold hard truth. You are getting a little ahead of yourself.
As far as removing the compressor goes, im gonna call bull**** on that. In order to feel a seat of the pants difference, you are gonna have to gain about 15hp. How are you gonna do that by removing an idler pulley??? You may live in a lower humidity climate, but have you ever thought about when you get in your runner in the rain, and you are wet, or your feet are wet? That water turns into condensation, and ends up on your windshield. if you want to keep a towel with you to wipe it off every 5 mins. go ahead i guess.
I have had years of experience building/modifying all kinds of cars. I have had several 3rd Gen Rx7s, stock twin turbos, and heavily modified single turbo cars, a C5 corvette, several BMWs (3 series, and 5 series) Infiniti G35....and the list goes on. I have worked on, and modified these cars myself. I know what i am talking about. Im not just an internet warrior that has researched stuff, i know first hand. Im just trying to keep you from sinking all kinds of cash in this thing, just to be disappointed when you dont reach your goals.
go ahead and put your runner on the dyno, the dyno doesnt lie. I bet with all the stuff you have done to it as of yet, you will be making 5hp over stock.. that you wont even be able to feel.

Just to build on what Matthew has said. I asked about the AC as a way to get more power. But I have never shared my intentions for my truck, so spare me the assumptions, and with my brand new lift and 150lb bumper/winch combo, I sure as hell am not going to the speedway.
However, there is this thing called I70 that is between me and my play land (mtns). It is about a 4000ft accent at up to 6% grade, and I would prefer to go 70mph in the left rather than 40mpg in the right.
If you have driven I70 with four people and gear, you will find that a V6 can quickly feel weak, and leave you crawling on roads you don't want to be crawling on.
I do however agree, that though it is dry here, I still use the defrost/defog. I was not aware that the AC was connected to the defrost system for added dehumidification. I am still curious about that one...
Final thought for those that think what Matthew wants is dumb...some people think ALL our little mods and fun we have with our rigs are dumb. I even feel a bit dumb driving around Denver with a winch...but I know what it is there for...and that is what matters.
Thanks for sharing, everyone, but lets have good attitudes about it.
Matthew, I just did poly rack bushing from energy suspension and it made a HUGE difference in handling. There is a recent thread with a link to the parts I bought for my 2000. I also did the swaybar bushings. It wasn't too bad a project.

I have never said that anything Matthew was planning was dumb. I am just here stating the FACTS. Take it for what it is worth, or just ignore it, and find out for yourself. I have had several PM conversations with Matthew for the plans for his runner. I have tried to be as helpful as possible. BUT, i have also brought up the possible pitfalls to doing such a project that some inexperienced people do not consider.
Even though i would probably never put a big bumper, or winch on my runner, i like the look. Those are the kinds of mods that are more practical, since the runner is a slow beast that has been known to be quite capable off road.
Just wondering what you think i have assumed about you??? Most of my responses on this thread has been directed more toward what Matthew has been saying. Again, i am only stating the facts. If you need more power to climb steep grades, you are gonna have to go forced induction. You just cannot get those kind of power gains with every bolt on ever known to mankind on these vehicles. If you dont believe me, just do a search on here, yotatech, customtacos. used superchargers are readily available for cheap. I only have a little over $450 in mine, and that was for a 60hp gain.
I apologize if i am coming across in a negative manner. I am just trying to be helpful to you guys and answer your questions as accurately as possible with reasons to back it up.
