Angry Surge on 1997 sr5 5 speed

Hello,

My 1997 5speed 4 runner just started to do this odd surge. I notice it most in 4th gear at about 35-40. I will shift through the gears get up to speed let off gas. When I gently accelerate it surges like it loses power or slips. I have experienced this surge in all gears but seems that I feel it most in 4th and 5th after reaching speed and then slightly pressing on gas. It is a double pulse/surge then it is gone.

Any ideas? Is this driveline or engine?

Thanks for any help

Sounds like an air or fuel delivery issue to me. I would suggest running through all the easy general maintenance items first, like checking the air filter etc. Also, try running an injector cleaning additive in your next tank of gas.

I'm not shure that you should be in 4th gear at 35 to 40 mph. That seems a little too slow for that gear. I have the same 97 with a 5speed and I use 4th about 45 to 50.

Speed was estimate

I will double check the speed, probably a little faster, I just know this just started to happen, and my driving habits have not changed so if to low of rpm shutter was the issue I would have had for the past 6 months I have owned the truck.

No problem

Checked speed through gears in 4th at 40 and up. The check engine light came on, and i used my reader and got a P0120 which says TPS/Pedal position sensor malfunction. So I will see if I can solve it with new TPS sensor.

FIXED the problem

Well after a code for the TPS sensor showed up I decided to go ahead and replace. 140,000 miles + and old one was original so I figured this would not hurt and cheap.

I also cleaned throttle body, MAF, and put in a new air filter even though mine was not that old.

I have not seen any of the symptoms back I was having before.

I plan on replacing spark plugs also after i check records to see when they were replaced last.

Preventive work.
