You can always use a volt meter and see if there is power to the socket. Stick a brick or something on the brake pedal and check it.
The old bulb should have a number on it..

Oddly enough...the bulb I pulled out of the truck (I'm the original owner) was a 921 size bulb....but no numbers/letters on it anywhere.

Does anyone know the p/n to the 3rd brake light housing(?) in the pic below? It says KOITO E4-2. Thanks in advance.

Factory bulb is Koito 18 watt. Just changed my original bulb after 20 years! ANd it was deformed. This bulb being burnt out made my truck shift erratically (triggers torque converter lockup) when puttin the turn signals on in the final drive gear at highway speeds. If this bulb burns out, beware of this.

Bulb
These are great to replace the bulb, but does anyone have an idea for how to change it to something better? Maybe an LED option? Thanks!

Bringing back this dead thread again to see if anyone has actually changed out the third brake light for a LED without any issues as I am in the process of switching to LEDs on everything. Thank you.

You just need to have load resistors in the brake light system to make sure the other systems that rely on the signal to work correctly. Put a load resistor with each brake light (on the sides) and you won't need to worry about the 3rd brake light bulb type.
It will likely be difficult to find an LED bulb that will have the right beam pattern to work exactly like the stock 921 though... (it comes into the housing at an angle, if I remember correctly)

I just replaced mine the other day with this: Amazon.com: LASFIT 921 912 W16W LED Third Brake Center High Mount Stop Light Bulbs, Red Light, Plug&Play: Automotive
Lights up plenty bright now since mine looked like the one Jason B posted above.

I replaced the two brake lights with LEDs and havent had any issues yet. I know i need to get a relay for the blinkers to prevent hyper flashing but what would the benefit of putting load resistors on each brake light be?

The brake light circuit needs low resistance in it for the ABS system to sense the brake circuit correctly. One incandescent is enough - and since people replace the third brake light last, they blame problems on that. It isn't specifically the third brake light, all three are directly connected. You just need sufficiently low resistance in the circuit *somewhere*. I suggest doing it down by the tail lights because there is more room/access to put a load resistor there.

I just noticed my original 3rd brake light bulb is out. If I have standard bulbs in the main brake lights, I can use an LED as a 3rd without any other resistance mods, right?
