keyless entry beep volume
My owners manual says the dealership can change the volume of the beep on my 4runner. You guys know ways around everything else on these things, Is there a shortcut to do this yourself. My the way, loving my 4runner. Also I had a thread a few months back talking about painting my brushguard. I used epoxy spray paint from Ace and it is still holding up to road gravel.

With the key out of the ignition and any door open, press and hold the UNLOCK switch on the remote for more than 5 seconds. The buzzer will sound 2 times.
For volume up, press the LOCK switch while pressing the UNLOCK switch.
For volume down, press the BACK WINDOW OPEN switch while pressing the UNLOCK switch.
To cancel, press the UNLOCK switch, and the buzzer will sound 2 times.
There are 5 volume levels, the initial level is set to intermediate.

If you open your hood and look in the far back left of the engine bay, you'll see a little black Denso module with a plug going into it. That's the "speaker" for the alarm beep. I unplugged mine because I don't need everyone knowing my car is being locked or unlocked. The lights flashing is enough for me

And like stated above, here's a guide on how to adjust the volume of the chirp. Personally, I just disabled mine completely from chirping.

How do you do this for '96-'98 who don't have the rear window down button?

bump-could this become a sticky please?
Found link via Yota Tech question by JWaldz
3rd Gen 4Runner Lock/Unlock Alarm Beep... How to change? - YotaTech Forums
bump to the top
Moderators could this become a sticky perhaps in Accessories or Pimp Zone or even right here in 3rd gens?
thanks again RockSlide. Great info from you like always.
As JWaldz noted he can not always hear the beep beep and as I am aging I notice same thing as well. Not really in favor of the horn honk to acknowledge the locking function.
I can always press the distress red button on back of the key fob if I need to locate the vehicle in a crowded parking lot for example.

My "buzzer" died earlier this year. At max volume, it can just barely be heard, and you really have to listen for it. It drives my wife nuts not being able to hear it.
Anyone have a "buzzer" they would like to sell for a nominal fee?

I set my beeper chirp to high this morning, thanks to this thread in a Google search, after just last night reading the part about contacting the dealer in my manual. The hell I needed a dealer to do that. I like to know they are locked. Apparently it won't chirp if a door is ajar.

I lost count of how many times I've read a post or thread and was like... "No Freaking way it's that easy..." or "dang, what else do I not know about my 4Runner!" Love this site and group of 4Runner owners!

Thread revival: despite turning the volume all the way up the buzzer is just barely audible with my head next to it. I went to eBay and got a replacement thinking the buzzer was shot. New one arrived, plugged it in, same scenario. Anyone have any ideas?

I haven't tried to clean it only because it looks like it's in great condition, but I think I'll try that. Simple enough to spray some cleaner to the contacts in the plug.. I'll check it with a multimeter and see if I'm getting 12v too. Thanks for your suggestion!
