Let's air out the back of the vehicle when the HVAC system is set to outside air and makes it easier for the doors to close. The one-way valve is so that the air from the back of the car doesn't come back into the car if the front windows are cracked, etc.

Thanks for the answer ! The only car I've seen that was hard to close the door with the windows shut was an old VW Bug. I swear those things would float.

how do you remove the back plastic panels completely from the truck with out having to cut it? I have been looking at mine trying to figure it out. I am going to gut my entire 4runner and most likely put newer seats in the front and re upholster the rear seats but keep the headliner, panels and carpet out and just dynamat some of the smoother flat surfaces this summer.

You can still get the part new from Toyota.

Mine was missing the flap as well. I just cut up an old tile sponge to fit the hole. It does a great job of keeping the dirt out. It doesn't do that well against water though. lol

It all comes right out. You need to have the back seats out first to make it easy (and you can see a bit of the dirt build-up I had in there before cleaning).

Nothing was in there from the factory on US/Canadian 4Runners.

In Brazil, the legally required warning triangle was strapped in that rack thingy in my '97 SW4 (Brazil market 4Runner). I guess you only get the triangle in countries that require it. Brazil also gets you a fire extinguisher under the front of the driver's seat and a first-aid kit in the glove box.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a vent like that for a mod I'm doing to my first-gen (move the vent to the back). May I know dimensions, especially that of the opening where it inserts?
TIA.

Is it possible to swap the quarter panel trim from a model with the larger storage compartment into my 98?

Yes, though it also requires some cutting of the sheet metal behind the panel. There has been a thread or two on here... search for it using a Google search with

in the search field with your search terms.

I apologize if I missed it, but what is the general depth of this newly-found storage area, before the application of carpet?
One of my favorite automobile EDC bags (by Maxpedition) is to hefty for this spot, in stock form...

Bumping this thread since I just did this mod. I would estimate the area to be around 5" deep at its widest point. I didn't seem to gain much depth by removing the black liner, but gained a fair amount of room towards the front/rear of the vehicle.

I carpeted the area as suggested in this thread and have noticed zero noise from things moving around. I fit a power inverter, air compressor with hose, Gerber hatchet, 30' recovery strap, small first aid kit and a bivy sack so far.
