Switch to manual locking hubs?

For a 3rd gen that is not a daily driver, but just a trail rig. I am wondering if figuring out a way to modify it to have manual locking hubs on the front wheels would be a good thing. I don't really need the fancy on-the-fly 4x4 at the cost of wear and tear of my CV's and boots from spinning all the time. Considering I want to do the tundra brake upgrade someday, I wonder how involved it would be to put in manual locking hubs at the same time...

Has anyone done this to their 3rd gen?

Is this a stupid idea concived only through the frustration of my recent tear in my CV boot?

Is there a major disadvantage I am not thinking of?

Thoughts?
