Need shock suggestions, stock 3rd gen...

First, yes I did a search and found that for performance, Bilsteins are often suggested, for a cheaper alternative and perhaps smoother ride, KYB or OEM Tokicos come up a lot.

But I thought I'd ask again, with specifics about my rig, usage and driving habits. What are some good aftermarket replacement shocks for this rig?

2000 4runner, 5 speed, 2.7L 3RZ motor. Daily driver, no lift and none planned. 235-75/15 BFG AT KO tires and stock 15" wheels. I'm don't wheel for sport but I travel often across the Oregon/Washington Cascades in winter weather. Also fairly frequent camping trips and travel on Forest Service roads, and occasional towing a 14' river raft.

I've owned this rig about a year. Currently has 101,000 miles, shocks appear to be original. I don't think this rig was used offroad all that much by previous owner. This is my second 4runner (also had an 88 1st gen) and third truck, so I know it won't ever ride like a Lexus. But it seems to ride pretty rough, even for a truck, and the rear bottoms out pretty easily. Front shocks seem to provide very poor control over potholes and such.

What kind of replacement shocks should I be looking at? Mostly interested in better ride quality, but I do appreciate control of body roll and lean in corners.

Also, what are some good airbags to put in the rear, for occasional heavy loads of camping and rafting gear?

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

I'm not sure about rear shocks myself as I'm considering new set too but if your rear is bottoming out without off roading, I'm going to guess, as an unprofessional, that those rear shocks are bad and rear coil springs are probably as well. I just replaced my rear coil spings with set off FJ80 for stiffer ride and lift but even with originals, I have never bottomed out. 99 runner.

Tokico

I bought some Trekmaster by Tokico back in July. They made a world of difference. I should have changed out the factory shocks at 40k. You can also say you're going green (only color they come in).

sounds like springs too

If you have rear butt sag as well then the rear springs are tapped out. Shocks will help but they can't counteract completely the spring weakness.

I would suggest the Tokico OEMs with some Old Man Emu 890s springs-should give you a bit of lift in back.

up front maybe some 99 fronts (tall springs) with the Tokico OEMs again.

trdparts4u.com carries Old Man Emus at a good price.

Honestly the possibilities are endless....
