Hey all sorry to revive an old thread but I am in the same boat now and looking for some concrete answers. Have a ‘99 Limited that needs a new tranny, in calling several Toyota parts departments I’ve gotten mixed answers. Some say I need the CA spec tranny which is discontinued while others have priced out the non-CA spec as an option. Does anyone have experience with the two and can for sure say if the non-CA spec tranny will bolt up and work as it’s supposed to on a CA spec truck?

There's no different in the function of the CA-spec vs Federal emissions transmissions. They have nothing to do with emissions or the exhaust. However, there are valve body designs between the years that do matter. The 99-00 transmissions will be a direct swap. 96-98 have different valve bodies but will fit and function the same but not the transfer case. A 01-02 will not work at all due to the lack of a transmission line pressure cable.

I'm making the assumption that you own a 4WD with the push button Multi-Mode transmission.

Ok yes this is what I was wanting to verify. I understand the valve body design mattering depending on year, however is it safe to say that any 99-00 used transmission would fit my truck? It is indeed a 4WD with the push button Multi-Mode & e-locker.

You can use any V6 (4-cylinder has a different bellhousing/etc.) trans from '96-'00. If you use a 96-98 trans, you need to swap the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans. You will have to swap over your transfer case if you get anything but a 99-00 Limited trans.

Differences in the valve body are internal (passage/pipe locations, etc.) and don't affect the control of the trans. As I said earlier, I have a '97 trans in my '99. Others have gone the other direction.

I have a 99 tranny in my 97 truck. I didn't have to change a single thing. I bought a parts truck off a member on here so I just used the transfer case that was already on the 99 tranny.

Thread Revival.

To answer those prior questions. There are 3 differences in the transmissions produced for the 4x4 models.

Differences:

1. Fed vs Cali. - Cali uses different dipstick to manuever around the exhaust and such. Toyota dealer ordered me a new dipstick due to leak; we found out that the federal dipstick will not fit a cali model. IN OTHER WORDS SWAP THE DIPSTICK.

2. Kick Down Transmissions vs electrically controlled - The 1996 - 2000 4x4 transmissions have a kickdown throttle cable. 2001-2002 has no kick down cable. ANY 4x4 transmission from 96-2000 will fit a 96-2000 4x4 4runner.

3. Internal Differences - The 96-2000 transmissions have various different valving and pump models, HOWEVER, the physical dimensions, input and output shaft dimensions ARE ALL THE SAME.

So what matters? Just the dipstick. 96-2000 4x4 transmissions fit 96-2000 4x4 4runners, you will just have to swap dipsticks if cali model vs fed model.
Now obviously you CANNOT (at least easily) swap in 2001-2002 transmissions these are cpu controlled and just no. Now though the 96-2000 has different valving and pump, have to remember these cars arent "smart" they dont give a shit what you hook them up too. The transmission is reading RPM, throttle position, and load to figure out what gear and pressure to run. In other words it is its own system seperate from "the car".

Hope this clears up earlier questions.
