96 rear axle seals

So here's the deal. The rear outer axle seals were leaking onto my rear brakes pretty much making them useless. Had to get a garage to fix because I had dads car in my garage. Funny how that works out. Dad gets his fixed for free and I have to pay for mine. Anyways I had the seals replaced but they were telling me that the outer seals (as in the seal in hub?????) were leaking also and there was a special tool to remove the ABS wheel to get it all apart. We tried just replacing the axle seals to see if that worked. So the end of last week (one week after getting it back) the new front rotors were warped so it went back for warranty and they told me that the axles are still leaking so the seals in the hubs need replacing. I'm a front wheel drive GM guy so my knowledge is limited on this. Every rear end I've worked on has cir-clips that have to be removed to remove the axle and there is only one seal. This doesn't really make sense to me. Anyone have that issue before? or is a total croc of shit? Sorry, it just seems fishy to me.

Brad

Brad, a little research in to the subject would have given you all you need ofr your axle seal issue.
There are inner and outer seals on our rear axles. The inner is a relatively easy driveway fix, the outer is a machine shop job unless you got a press in your garage. Replacing the outer seal requires replacing the axle bearing and ABS sensor.
This problem is VERY common in our generation trucks.
A repeat axle seal failure is most definitely a differential breather valve clog.

use correct axle seal to be sure

yes there are inner and outer seals

Be sure the inner seal part number used ends with digit #6 and use the Toyota suggested replacement.

repeated failure can be many reasons-it's oversimplifying to say it has to be a clogged breather. None the less that is cheap insurance to replace it and might as well extend it upwards while at it if you ever cross water.

I had my drivers side rear axle seal done at 44K and again at 99K. The first time the incorrect part number was used. Toyota has updated the recommended seal and redesigned it.

Again be sure the actual inner seal part ends with digit #6.
