power steering pump

I just bought an 06 V8 Sport and am selling my 99 SR5 o a family member. The truck has 78k miles on it. The belts were making some noise so i decided since it has never been done to do the timing belt as well.

I am normally pretty handy but have very limited time. Closing on a new house in 4 weeks, expecting a new baby in 8.

I called around and to my surprise the dealer was the cheapest place to get this done. 300 bucks plus tax includes parts and labor for all belts. I thought this was a good price?

Well he just called to tell me that the waterpump was leaking and gave me the whole deal about "its better to do it while we are here" so i agree.

He also mentions that the power steering pump is leaking. I always notice some wetness around the pump but every time I check the fluid it appears to be fine?

My question is [man I went along way to get to my question huh] How pricey is this job to have them do Vs how much time and cost for the part should I expect if I do it myself?

Last thing. I have been driving around in the V8 for 2 weeks now and started up the 99 for the first time yesterday. Now they are both different animals for sure but I will miss the 99 probably more then I will miss any of the other cars I have owned. The list includes cars like 2.7T S4, E36 M3, Saab Viggen. Just something about haulin through the woods are plowing through snow storms I guess.

For the parts:
Water pump = ~$75 (plus core)
PS pump = ~$120 (plus core)

They are both easy to replace....

When you wrote 'Saab Viggen' I was thinking haha thats funny or maybe you were in the Swedish Air Force or something. I had never heard of that version of the 9-3.

I bought a repair kit for my p/s pump for about $20. It has all the seals and gaskets in it. I am yet to install it but it's certainly something that could be done in the average guys garage, if you have the time. I can send you the FSM details for it if you decide to try it yourself.

who makes those for that price, good company? I was looking around online and for the PS pump I found them to be anywhere from 90-140.

Then for the hell of it I called the dealer. 397 dollars!!!

Here are the parts for your specific vehicle (earlier, I looked them up for mine):

(PS Pump)
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...PartType=C0031

(PS Pump Repair Kit)
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...PartType=C0203

(Water Pump - Reman)
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...PartType=C0331

(Water Pump - New)
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...PartType=C0331

BTW, IMO, there is no reason to go with a new water pump. They are the simplest devices on vehicles these days. The consist of three parts....the housing, the blades and the bearing. The blades and bearing are usually replaced when they are remanufactured.

The water pump has been taken care of with an oem unit. Are the aftermarket power steering pumps not as good as oem?
