Noise/whine/howl

Noise, whine ,and howl ONLY when engaged in four weel drive (hi). Coming from front end. Differential? 190k 2001

Help!

Sounds like differential to me. Any vibrations to go along with it? I would inspect the CV shafts and front driveshaft/U-joints and if all of those check out, then I would say all signs point to diff.

No vibration. Just the noise. From the front. When in two wheel drive no noise.

From experience with other 4x4's I would stress taking a very close examination of your front drive shaft, U joint, CV joint type stuff before I started tearing into the Diff but do check the fluid level for sure. To really get a close look you may have to get the vehicle in the air, turn and shake things and even run the 4x4... Even then a clicking U joint etc can transfer its noise and vibrations and still sounds as if its coming from the Diff. Would be wise to disconnect the drive shaft etc to check and feel if those parts are moving freely.. I found this out the hard way..
