Carbon Fiber

I am taking a class in which I will have the ability to make things out of carbon fiber/kevlar. I am trying to think of things on the 4Runner that would look good in carbon, maybe you guys could help me out?

Oh, I also have access to a laser engraver, I'd love to but that to use on the runner as well...

Thanks

All the stuff the tuner crowd gets in carbon fiber pretty much sums it up. If you could do a full sport edition hood with the scoop in carbon fiber, that would be pretty killer.

Interior bits and trim would be easier, and if done well could maybe look nice, depending on the interior color. I dunno. I wouldn't put anything carbon fiber on a 4runner myself, just because i see it every day on riced out Chevy Cavaliers and Honda Civics.

I think the dash trim would look cool in carbon fiber (around the stereo and vents like the wood trim). X2 on a sport hood.

Rear bumper in Carbon Fiber would be sick.

Your telling me you have unlimited access to that stuff? That's insane because the cost of carbon fiber is very high.

The spoiler would pretty cool to do in carbon fiber. Hmm...maybe the fender flares. Wouldn't you need to do something like a reverse mold? I didn't think you could just lay the mat on the object because it would be larger than the original piece when you finished.

I can't think of any practical uses for a 4Runner. It's very difficult to get CF to look good and perform a function. It's lightweight and can be structurally stiff, but beyond that it's a fad when it comes to 99.9% of vehicles.

If you make a mold of the original that would be the reverse mold.

I'm thinking about the spoiler, I think that might be cool. As has been stated before most things on a 4runner wouldn't look that great. Yes I have unlimited access to carbon fiber and kevlar, the class is funded by the national science foundation so they pay for everything, alot of the stuff we use is cutoff material from Boeing (keep in mind a Boeing cutoff is like 3 yards of a 60" wide roll)

We also have a CNC mill for making the reverse molds so that isn't a problem. As for the sport hood, if I made one i would paint it, I don't think a carbon hood would look very good on a runner.

Dude, where are you taking this class at? Sure as hell isn't Saddleback haha

And VIS Racing sports sells a Carbon Fiber sport hood for 4Runner's for about 800 total (with shipping)

Burtman sells one too for 579 (probably around 700 with shipping)

I didn't know anyone actually made a carbon hood for the 4runner, interesting...

And actually the class is at Saddleback, Look up MFG201 if you are interested, there are a few prerequisites but it's totally worth it!

the grill insert on the sport hood in carbon would be nice! are you going to get to play with Pre Preg Carbon? my company has been aero parts out of pre preg dry carbon for over a decade. our parts are made in pressurerized molds baked in an autoclave. so it is a true dry carbon composite part not like these hand laid hoods from Vis and seibon as those are made out of dry cloth which is not infused with resin. our company
