Test Results

So after the dealership messed up my plans to do an injector swap this weekend (damn counter idiot), I did the compression test anyway.

I only had a chance to do 4 of the 6: cyls #1, 3 and 4 hit at 180, cyl #2 (problem area) hit at 175-178 and held compression.

SO....after all this, new coil pack, plugs, wires, cleanings, cat and muffler...am I safe to assume (yea I know) that its the fuel injector that is making the misfire happen in Cyl #2?

Thanks
Bob

What kind of symptoms does it have besides the CEL? We just need a little more of the back story on this first.
How does it start up?
Does it have any hesitation under load or has it lost power?
Does the CEL just flash or does it stay on?
Was the code P0302?
Have you swapped coil packs to see if the miss moves to another cyl.?
Injectors can be tested before you spend the time and $$ to replace them, or were you just going to trade places with the injectors to see if the miss moves?

1997 Toyota 4Runner, 3.4L (engine #2, not installed by me)

Ok, so as of now I have installed NEW Denso Plugs, NGK Wires, Magaflow 91005 Catalytic Conveter and Magnaflow Muffler 12286, fuel injector/fuel cleaner, cleaned MAF, TB, new coil pack, swapped coil packs, wires and new air filter.

P0302: Misfire in Cylinder #2

I haven't been using my remote start to see if thats the issue. I can clear the code, but it always comes back.

Starts up fine, till you get it warmed up, them it somewhat hesitates. Stalled out a few weeks ago while making a right turn, just stalled quietly like someone has left it in N and turned the key off. Started right back up when I pulled over and put it in park.

After driving for awhile, it starts up slow. There is a loss of power and mpg. The CEL does flash sometimes, then just stays on till you clear it. When its real bad, the exhaust is real loud and smells rich and it shakes around 50-60mph. Feels like there is a miss.

I was going to do a inj. swap, but Toyota screwed up the
o-ring and gromet replacements and I am still waiting on them.

Weather conditions in Delaware have been very cold (30F-35F during the day and 20F to 5F during the nights with wind chills to 0F to -2F). We did have a few days of abv 40F weather.

Bob

I think you're on the right track, I would test/swap the injectors next.

I was going to say that your compression is within acceptable variance. Now if you were reading 180 on all cyl and then got a 160 on #2 I would say there is an issue. I had an issue with my 86 Runner misfiring and loosing power and after replacing everything found out that the wire going to the injector had a small fray in the insulation and would sometimes short out causing the misfire.

What a wonderful Friday this is (can you feel the sarcasm)....Its 18F this morning, so I let my truck warm up for 5 mins....AND ITS RUNNING LIKE SH!T. Now I'm getting P0300 and P0302. Sounds like it has no exhaust, jumpin, sputtering, hesitating.

Now I have to find away to install the new injector...if its that....in a cold a$$ garage....

I hear ya Bob, Try 4f this morning. Did you find a way to test #2 injector or are you gonna tear everthing apart to check it? This is what I need to do also but like you I really dont feel like doing at 0F wich is what is supposed to be tonight.I moved my coil packs around the other day didnt reset the codes but the CEL went off it still seems to be misfiring but not as bad as it has been I dont get it. It kinda comes and goes. So for now im waiting for the CEL to come back on so I can get codes read see if anything has changed.

Just so fustrated right now with it. My dad is going to take it to is Votech school and let the automotive instructor (who used to be a top mechanic) look it over. He has all the tools a dealership uses and is going to run over everything for me.

Hi Bob, I'm in the early stages of dealing with the same problem on my 96 with 140K miles on it. Plugs are new, coil packs ruled out, leaning toward an injector but #2 is on the harder side to access. Did you ever figure yours out? -Bill-

Mine was the injector. I just narrowed it down to that and had a friend listen to the engine witha scope. He said he could hear the difference bewteen the injectors.

I bought a rebuilt injector and cost me $40. I spent a total of $120-130 with all new o-rings, gaskets and gromets and injector.

Thanks Bob, I think this is the point I'm at. Do you know how and where exactly he listened to determine that it was in fact the #2 injector? Do you think when you replace one it's wise to replace all as the others are likely to be right behind? This sounds like a big and expensive job. Just want to make sure this is my prob also before delving into major work (which I will likely have to hire out). I appreciate all your input as you have been through what I am going thru now! -Bill-

If you do not buy all new ones at least have the other ones cleaned by a professional. I payed 20 for each injector to be cleaned by a professional and he gave me all new gaskets. I have a print out of the before and after performance of each injector.

Did you do a differential compression test or just hook up the gauge and crank the engine?
