catalytic converter

I'm getting ready to install a new exhaust system with custom 2.25 inch piping and 24" Magnaflow muffler and would like to know if I need a new cat or not? My truck is a '97 with 157k miles. Do cats ever need to be replaced? How would I know if my cat is bad?

If I do need a new cat, where cat I get a good cheap one?

You don't need a new cat. You could get a high flow cat.

I installed a flowmaster super 44 series muffler on my 3rd gen and after a while I got a cel and vsc vsc track too.the trouble code say a bad catalytic converter the first o2 sen.reads 3.something and the secon o2 sen. read.99(this one is after the cats...) any ideas??just replace the first o2s.? replace the cats?(or remove...I live in a rural area in québec)any insight on aftermarket cats? the cheapest I can find is 160$ on ebay.I could try replacing only the weird-shaped first one and remove the other and straight pipe this...

Hey guys first time post. I am looking to smog my 3rd gen 2002 4 runner but the CAT monitor came on. While attempting to complete the drive cycle 300 miles later the check engine light came on for the Waco emissions P0440. My technician found where the small vapor leak was coming from but feels that even if I fix that repair it may be separate from the monitor clearing.

To avoid going down this expensive rabbit hole I heard in CA a smog referee will still smog my car with just one monitor reading since it’s a 2001? Is this true?

So is it a 2002 or a 2001?

My apologies it’s a 2001’but I found out the previous owner already requested a 2 year extension for the CAT monitor so they won’t grant me a new one.

What do you think is the best solution to get the CAT monitor to go away? My mechanic feels the CAT’s and 02 sensor are good based on his test.

catalytic converter

In PA my 97 can have 2 readiness not set and still pass emissions. My 04 grand Cherokee was allowed 1 monitor not set.

For me the longest to set are EVAP and CAT. But normally if it’s above 45 outside the EVAP and O2 will set on my drive to work and back which is around 55 miles round trip.
