Going rate for timing belt service?
Hi guys,
I'm looking at an '02 4runner with 88k miles on it. The timing belt service will need to be done... How much does that generally run? Isn't there a 90k service? What does that generally entail? Thanks!

should be around 500-600 dollars, but to be honest i had 198K on my belt before it got changed and alot of others had as well, just an fyi not telling you to skip it or anything.
if you want this information look in your manual it has all of this at the back in the maintenance schedule information.

While you're in there doing the timing belt, do the water pump too and inspect or replace the idler pullies too. New thermostat is a good idea. $5-600 is right on the mark, but a dealer will be more - probably like $800-1000.

My father in law got it done recently on his camry for $260 with the water pump at some indi shop. I thought it was crazy cheap.

yeah that's a camry though so you can't really make a legit comparison, i think the water pump alone on ours is 150-200 plus the belts would bring you to that price alone in parts...

That can't be right. Not saying that's not what they told you, but the service writer that told you that either misunderstood what needs to be done, or he's smokin the white rocks. I don't know of a single dealer in CA that charges<$75/hr. It's a 6 hour job minimum because you NEED to replace the water pump too - because it WILL NOT last till 180,000 miles (your next TB/WP change) and still provide adequate cooling to your engine and/or not leak. 6 hours x $75/hr. = $450 for labor only - and that's if you can even find a dealer that only charges $75/hr!! If $379 is in fact the price for the TB and WT at a dealer in LA, I'll eat my shoe - and I know what dealer I'll be going to from now on, haha!
Also 06glider, The service isn't recommended until 90K, so you have another 12K miles before you need to worry about it. Yet another thing that makes me skeptical of this dealer.

I'm trying to get a buddy of mine to go check it out for me. If he falls through, a nice fella from here has volunteered to go check it out (but i know its a bit out of his way, so I'm trying to pursue other options first). As long as it checks out, it seems like a pretty darn good deal!

yeah didn't think that price was correct either, but you know they guy is going to find out that it really is more in the range of $500-800 depending.
379 at a "TOYOTA" dealer IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
