Keyless remote / keyless entry reprogramming question(s)

Greetings!

I have been trying to program a keyless remote that has the identical FCC ID as the prior remote and have not been successful. I have followed the instructions that came with the remote and they are same steps as the ones listed on the forum.

“5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.”

I can get into the ‘programming mode’ – the power door locks cycle. But when I do step #6

“6a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.
6b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle (LOCK then UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps 6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.”

the door locks cycle TWICE – indicating that the remote has ‘not been accepted’. I presume (and that is a big presumption) that since the doors cycled twice when I pressed the remote buttons, and the doors did nothing when I didn’t touch the buttons, that the remote is working and is just being rejected by my t4r.

not sure why it is not accepted, but is it possible that the maximum of 4 remotes had been previously programmed before I bought the (used 1999) t4r? or is the keyless entry system defective (my other remote works just fine).

if the 4runner has hit the max number of remotes, is there a way to clear / or alter that?

Any ideas or suggestions? thanks!

Once you begin the remote programming, any previously programmed remotes will be wiped out. That's why if you have 2 or more remotes, they need to be programmed at the same time even if you only need to program one. I believe that the lock cycle at the end confirms that the programming is complete. When you try again, after you get the last door lock cycles that supposedly signals failure, close the driver door and try the remote.

Edit: I found this sequence too. See if it helps:

4Runner Instructions

I have a 1999 4Runner and I followed the directions above (which I've copied below) with one exception. In step 8 -- I held the lock button instead of the unlock button in order for the directions to work.

Step 1 - open drivers side door and get in your vehicle.

Step 2 - put key completely into ignition, then pull out.

Step 3- with door open, lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 4 - close door then open door.

Step 5 - lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 6 - put key completely into ignition then turn to the on position then pull key out (you will now hear the door locks lock then unlock a couple of times)

Step 7 - now quickly press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time only for about a second.

Step 8 - then quickly press the lock button for just a second.

Step 9 - exit car and close the door

After you do this you should hear a beep then your lights will flash. This will indicate that your remote is programmed to your vehicle.

I've found that the timing is critical. "About" 1 second doesn't work, it needs to be one second.

This seems much easier than the process described above...
Are there any disadvantages to resetting the ECU? Does anyone else have experience with this process?
I just ordered a new fob and will be attempting this soon...

I'm in the same boat, I think it has been the most frustrating thing I've done on my truck because I can't get it to work. Very agitating

I was having the same problems with the original remote. I sat in the drivers seat and thought that its possible that the antenna is too close or being blocked by the interior somehow. So I tried steps 6a and 6b from about 5 feet away and bam, it worked. Hope it works for yall. Good luck
