Powertrain warranty on used 2001

Just picked up an '01 Limited with 138,000 miles. I practically stole that thing. They wanted $11,430 and I drove it away for $8800 otd trading in my 96 subaru impreza outback. They only gaveme $500 for my trade.

I opted for the 2 yr/24,000 mile powertrain warranty with free lifetime oil changes. It basically costs $30 for 51 months. What do you guys think? Should I cancel it? I'm mainly in it for the powertrain warranty and could care less about he oil changes although it did sweeten the deal. What odds would you give that the engine, transmission, diff, etc will crap out in the next 24,000 miles?

Under the 'Exclusions' section it reads:

This agreement does not provide coverage :

D. If any alterations have been made to Your Vehicle or You are using or have used Your Vehicle in a manner not recommended by the manufacturer, including, but not limited to , the failure of any custom or add on part, trailer hitches, emissions and/or exhaust systems modifications, engine modifications, transmission modification and/or drive axle modifications. All frame or suspension modifications lift kits, oversized/undersized tires, except for vehicles with this equipment as documented on the application at the time of vehicle purchase.

Right now I'm thinking I'm going to cancel it. It seems that if anything did go wrong with the engine, tranny, etc. it would be after 162k miles. And if something did happen, its not going to be covered.

You mean it's a $30 payment every month? I'd cancel, save up that $30 a month ($1500) for when something does come up... if it does.

I took out a small loan for the vehicle. The warranty is rolled into the financing.

Then I'd say you've got yourself a fine warranty there! Enjoy the peace of mind and pay extra on the payments to cut the balance down sooner so you don't pay all the interest!

Yeah, unless modding voids coverage. It kinda sounds that way.

I think the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects us to a point. They have to prove the modification caused the failure. They can't just say "yep your engine threw a rod but you lifted it so you're out!"

I just talked to the guy that sold me the warranty when I dropped off my trade in title today.

He said that it's the aftermarket part itself that isn't covered by the warranty. For instance, if I lift it and something on the powertrain craps out, I'm still covered. Me thinks I'll keep the warranty.

Actually, I just crunched some numbers and I think I'm going to cancel it.

By keeping the warranty, I'm betting $1500 that the engine or tranny is going to crap out in 24k miles or 2 yrs. After reading about how long people's t4r's are running, I don't think that this is going to happen...

Unless someone can offer me their own personal insight/experience of their 3rd Gen t4r's engine or tranny crapping out before 162k miles.
