You could use some simple felt padding to stick to the side of the seat between the two, or even the soft side of velcro I've found useful for similar situations.
And by the way, I've never seen such a seat in a 3rd gen. Those resemble the 2nd gen seats in upholstery...
Here's an example of the Velcro, before I replaced my harmonic balancer, my car shook really bad at idle. The door panels rubbed on the dash and made a really annoying noise. I shut them up with the velcro but then replaced the harmonic balancer which silenced the entire car's rattles.
