i too am curious i took a 1100 mile round trip a few weekends ago and i averaged about 21mpg there and back on the highway and doing about 70-80mph the most i got from one tank was 335 miles i believe

i am all stock minus 265/75/16 BFG's

now back home driving to and from work 6 miles each way and some around town i am getting just over 225 a tank i have not calculated MPG but i know its much lower then the highway trip i took.

i guess i will do fuel filter , air filter clean the MAF, and Throttle body

then plugs, and wires

around the town driving is killing the mileage and im driving it hard ( IE mashing the pedal)

anything else i should do ?

I can get 21 on the highway but my norm around town is 15-17 which ends up being about 220-250 a tank so a 60-70 mile per tank drop isn't out of the ordinary. My fillups usually end up being between 15-16 gallons.

For strictly city driving, 14 - 15.5 is about what I'm getting.

You guys who are getting 16 - 18 in the city: Are you running 5 speeds? I think that makes a huge difference. My '04 Tacoma with the same 3.4 as the 4runner, with a 5 speed, could regularly get 16 - 17 in the city, so I'm laying the blame for my poor mileage squarely on the slushbox.

The other issue is rear end ratios. As I understand it, the trucks with lockers have lower gear ratios (4.3 vs 4.1.) I don't know if that's true, but other things being equal a vehicle with a lower ratio is going to get worse MPGs. Mine has both the auto and the rear locker so I may have a low ratio, too, which could also explain the MPG difference with my Taco (which was not a TRD and did not have the locker.)

I am getting about the same as you. I only drive 2 miles to work so my MPG is around 16-17 or so most of the time. Highway I think I get about 21 or so. My next thing to do will be clean the air filter and MAF and TB, hoping to squeeze a bit more of it it then.

I don't know how this is possible, but i've been getting 1-2 mpg better by driving with the ECT on! I've often heard people saying this but never believed it. Well after three tank fills im a believer, and it's not going off anytime soon.

Speaking of this anyone know why you could possibly get better mileage with ECT on?

OK I was concerned with this before I got my wheels and tires.

I bought my car with 265/75's on them and was averaging around 18-20 miles a gallon. I do a lot of mixed driving so some was highway, traffic, and even little stints of off-roading during a tank.

I just put on a lift and got 285/75 and have been looking at about 17-19 miles per gallon. My car has 160,000 miles and I am not sure when all the last service maintence was preformed on it.

I will be changing the oil/filters/fluids during this week.

I am extremely happy with my mileage compared to my brother in law and his jeeps.

Also, mine is a 5 speed which probably helps a lot!

I've only gone through a few tanks (got the runner 5/8/10) and do only stop and go in rural Wa. and only get 15mpg. I did pull a code for missfire cyl3. and it was running very rough, changed the plugs this weekend. Plugs for middle cylinders on both banks were in real bad shape (coil pack issue?). Curious to see what my MPG's are gonna be. I am thinking about the motor-vac thing too! With 212,800+ miles I am gonna need every little bit of help I get!

I just started driving with ECT on a couple of tanks ago, and so far it has increased my mileage from around 19 (mix hwy/city) to 20.5/21. My guess is that even though it's revving higher when you accelerate, you spend less time accelerating up to cruising speed than you would with the ECT off. Maybe the amount of fuel burned on a short quick acceleration is less than a long slow acceleration to cruising speed. I was also pleasantly surprised

Running stock here and getting 22-23 mpg Hwy (325 miles/tank) and 18-19 (285 miles/tank). I, too, experienced an increase in mpg when driving with ECT on. At 208K, I'm taking all the advice I can to prolong the life of this Runner and it has made a tremendous difference. It is also a reminder of somethings I need to get done-I am in need of a TB and MAF sensor cleaning.

Mixed driving-combination of city stop/go; state hwy, interstate hwy, and country roads. I find that the engine shifts more consistently and is more responsive with ECT on- I don't consider myself a harsh driver and not a Sunday driver by any means but, when the wife yells: "...punch it Chewie!" I listen.

I do about 75% hwy at around 65 mph and 25% city at 35-45 mph, and saw about a 1.5 mpg increase.

I average around 15 in town and 16.5 - 17 on the highway, with a lifted and loaded down truck (5200 lbs. +).

There are some of us, obviously, who failed to get the built in tail wind option from the factory.

The lowest I have had was returning from Little Rock, AR... pulling a trailer into a 30mph headwind... 12.8 mpg. The highest I have had was returning from Albuquerque, NM... downhill with a tailwind... 25.6 mpg.

I have been getting approx 325-350 on a tank. a mix of driving highway and around town. I have not tried the ect yet, but i will on the next fill. Also wondering does altitude play a factor in mpg?
