Cruise Control 1996 Limited

I was told about this issue on our 1996 4R this evening. It is a 96 limited and apparently on a road trip this past weekend the cruise control would not engage. The button works and the light on the dash lights up and stays steady and will turn off when it is turned off. Apparently though the cruise won't actually engage to a set speed. The only thing that appears to function work is the on/off button.

I poked around the board and didn't see anything solutions for this specific issue. I did notice the spring coil/wire (forgot the name for that wire) possible issue. However, I tried the horn and the dash does light up as if the cruise is ready so I don't think that is the problem (but can't necessarily eliminate it). I also noticed there was a test procedure mentioned but that was for the 2nd gens...anything like this for the 3rd gens?

I haven't had time to do any troubleshooting and I have to replace the antenna mast (again - stupid 3rd gen pwr antennas...the next time it will be a taco whip!), do the front brakes and my diff drop on my 07 4R. Hopefully all this weekend. Anyone have this issue with their cruise control turning on/off but not actually engaging when you set a speed? Solutions or stuff to troubleshoot?

Thanks!

Sometimes mine won't engage too, but mine is the fact that the clutch pedal spring is a little weak. If I put my foot under the clutch pedal and pull up, it works fine.

Mine is an SR5. I'd bet your Limited has an auto so no clutch pedal!

Yes the 96 we have is an auto....so no clutch pedal. Interesting....figured someone would have a clue by the time I got home from work Oh well...maybe someone will come through eventually. I'd rather have a specific target for troubleshooting than just ripping stuff apart.

I'll keep waiting!

Yup all 3 lights are working when you step on the pedal.

OK found the issue (and I am rather annoyed about it).

Finally had a chance to look at the other runner today. Replaced the stupid pwr antenna. Piece of cake...why does the dealer need to charge 160-200 bucks....shees!!!

Anyway back to the CC...The truck had just been in for service prior to this CC issue occurring. I am starting to think the dealer is "breaking" things on purpose. One quick look at the cruise control actuator cable and the throttle body indicated the problem immediately! They had disconnected the cable when they were working on it and failed to reconnected it!!!! That explains why there was no flashing lights or any indication of anything actually wrong.

Not sure if that is the issue you are experiencing but it is something to check. Now that I have looked at it the other thing to check is to see if the cable is broken. As with any cabled system like a hatch release it could potentially break.

Now ... shall I work on my 07 and do the brakes tomorrow...or not? Guess it will depend what time I wake up in the morning.

Dealer Sabotage, never think of that but these days I'm surprised it's not the first thing we think of...

Glad you figured it out and it was easy!

Cruise Control Problems

While this thread is old I am hoping that someone can provide me with some help. I have a 1996 Limited automatic (230,000 miles). The original CC failed a number of years ago. It initially would not engage on an irregular basis. The light would come on but go out or blink when I engaged the unit. At times it would engage after a stop for gas. This went on for some time before the unit failed completely. Replaced the unit with a used unit and it worked fine for about a year and a half but then failed in the exact same manor as the original. I purchased a second used unit and it worked for less that a week before failing in the same way. Dealer wants $2,000 for the repair. However, I think there is more going on than just the actuator failing. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be involved.

Any help.
