Mid-3rd Gen Upgrades...

So, I'm going to be doing the center console swap from a 99-02 in my 96, but the thought occurred to me to see if the back storage compartment/side panel was also swappable between my 96 and the newer 3rd gens? I'd love to have that extra room to hide my amps and wires...

Also, anyone know if the 99-02's came with a blue interior?

I've seen a writeup on yotatech of someone swapping in the bigger rear storage compartment before so I know it has been done. I've never seen a blue interior on anything after '97 personally, but if they did do blue in the later years, it's going to be rare.

i'd just cut the plastic bucket out of there and mount to the body that should give you more then enough room and no one will ever know until they take the cover off.

..Never actually looked back there. Is mounting the amp to the body hard at all? I've always mounted my amps to either the back of the seat or the subwoofer box itself.

I've sometimes thought about just selling my '96 and buying a '99-01, but it's hard to find a '99-01 with a 5spd and the elocker (although I could live without the elocker). I love my 5spd way too much to trade it for an auto.

man i just saw a '99 5 speed with locker here with only 83K on it...they wanted 15K for it though...boo! lol

but yeah not that hard just drill and tap then a touch of paint to cover the bare steel you created, i know some others have done this on yotatech, i'm not much of an audio guy so can't comment on it too much but it seemed to be a cool way of hiding wires and amps and such.

This guy's Sport has blue interior so I would say they did. Jsmarine's 4runner build thread (lots of pics)
You guys down in the US are so lucky. Up here in Canada, I think starting in '99, they mostly had beige interiors up here and only 1 or 2 colors came with the grey interior.

my '99 has the beige and is from canada and personally i don;t like blue, think it just looks weird , Grey, beige and black are about the only colors of interior i have ever liked, unless we're talking about cars from the 50's-70's then it's white or candy red....lol..god dam I'm a snob, lol

I might be willing to drive to WA for a 4Runner... I've made that trip before! But it would have to be perfect and at a GREAT price to make the trip worth it. It seems there's a ton of 4runners around here for sale, but they're either overpriced or not a 5spd.

Thanks for the link! That looks like a great mod, but I think Brian2sun is right about finding a blue interior.

Can you post his craigslist ad? I might hit him up and see if he has the interior parts I need (and see if he'll ship).

Jsmarine's 4runner looks like the inside is the same blue color as mine... I wonder if they made blue cloth seats too. Hmmm.... HA, my '96 totally look '99 by the time I'm done with it! Maybe I should just buy a '99-01.

They made Blue interiors in 99, idk about the other years, but it means the parts are available in blue.
