Accidentally put tranny in reverse while going 40 mph forward

I was gliding down a hill in neutral and accidentally threw the tranny in reverse. The 4runner jolted a little, like shifting from D to 2, and felt no power steering. Engine died.

Anyways, just wanted to share that story. Has anyone accidentally done what i did before?

That's because you stalled out the engine. Why were you "gliding" down a hill at 40mph?

I did it...

...in a mid-70's Ford Pinto Wagon coming down from Red Rocks Amphitheater after a concert late one night circa 1979.

Same thing happened, stalled out, killed the PS. I was able to put it in neutral and start it back up.

Fortunately, it wasn't my car, it was my sister's boyfriend's car so I don't know if it did any long-term damage.

Holy flashbacks, Batman!
We rented a Chevy Trailblazer back around '99 or so on one of our business trips to Oregon and we beat the living shiat out of that thing.
I would take that thing to about 60 mph and "accidentally" slap it into reverse without taking my foot off the gas. The friggin thing would roast the tires for about 150 feet. Too funny. We must have accidentally done that about 5 times in a row. Tranny took it like a champ.

Yikes!

That actually sounds a little bit scary. I'd be worried that something inside of the tranny would give way and the whole thing would grenade and send tranny bits flying all over the place.

On an unrelated note, I was sitting in traffic one day wondering what was causing the holdup. I looked over in the right hand lane and there was a semi trucker that had pulled over and was starting to put out road flares. There were bits and pieces of what appeared to be gears and metal bits scattered throughout the far right lane trailing about 300ft behind him. The pieces had to belong to the semi that was pulled over .

Thats why you dont buy rentals...

Imagine the poor sucker that bought this one and cant figure out why the tranny exploded so soon.

I did the exact same thing about a month ago. I had just sent a bottle of SeaFoam through the engine, and I was coasting so I could rev the engine up without accelerating. I went to drop it back into drive...and blew right by it. Truck shuttered, and died. No problems since...but scared the hell out of me.

It happened to me a while back. Stalled the engine and coasted like it was in neutral. I put it in neutral and started the engine, and kept on driving. 50,000 miles later and I don't have any ill effects from it. I think you will be fine. Just don't get in the habit of doing it...

too funny!!

I was 15 and my sister's friend let me drive her 5.0 mustang, I thought I was a Bad A$$!! I was trying to speed shift the automatic doing burnouts and down shifting around corners, I flew up to a corner probably doing about 40 and downshifted all the way into reverse the car came to a skid with tires smoking and stalled out. I shat myself, started the car and drove carefully back to where my sister was thanked her friend grabbed my huffy and pedaled my lil butt home as fast as I could, LOL!!!

speeding..

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS..

This is turning into other forums I so hate.

The dude was just coasting down a hill..

Nobody said what angle the hill was, and it may have been a small hill. 40MPH is not speeding. You dont know he was riding his brake. You dont know were the hell he was. So leave the unknown details out and stick to saying stupid stuff about the ONE thing you do know...

He shifted into reverse.

Well trying to figure out how some of the others are saying they down shifted into reverse unless mine is the only transmission that shifts P R N D 2 1(L) and everyone elses shifts P N D 2 1 R...LOL That is why they put the button on top so you don't "accidently" shift into Reverse. I guess also why Toyota doesn't tell people to shift to Neutral when their accelerator sticks. FYI I do sometimes put mine in Neutral to coast down a hill, I don't see anything wrong as long as you know the road and can see traffic a long ways ahead of you.
