looks to me like your cv boot ripped and threw the grease everywhere, and it also had water in it.... best i can figure...

My other question is how long can I drive on this before i need to repair it? (its my DD)

u can continue to drive it, but you will lose that cv joint... not that big of a deal beacuse its the front and you dont need it for street driving... however, if you use 4wd you will need to replace it asap... might get away with just a boot and a repack of the grease.. but once grit gets in there it will die fast.

naaa... a cv joint is not too bad...... maybe 300 never replaced them on a 4 runner so thats a rough estimate...

I'm really not that mechanicaly inclined, even if I was, I've not no tools here and no where to work on it. You guys think its better to replace just the boot or do the half shafts from autozone?

how much do u use 4wd? if seldome.. i would do the boot... just clean it real well.... if alot, i would go the half shaft route... try a search and see f there is a dyi here.

That boot doesn't look ripped from what I can see of it.....that goo looks more like oil and water.
The OP should maybe check the radiator for goo and his oil for more goo.
Isn't cv grease usually dark green/blackish?

agreed.. however the grease in the cv will turn that color w water same as oil and water will.... and its right in the cv area........ but check these things too.

well there you go get the cv and stop on by it takes a hour or soo ..also pick up a little bottle of blue thread lock at the parts store
