Angry Power Steering Rack Center Bolt

I just can't seem to find a way to break loose the center bolt on the power steering rack. I am replacing the bushings with ones I got from Wheeler's. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

What have you tried so far? I broke mine loose with a breaker bar without too much trouble. If you're trying to break it loose with a normal wench or ratchet it probably won't budge very easy and may break a ratchet. Did you spray it down with PB Blaster and let it sit for a day or so?

It's only been sitting in PB Blaster for half a day. I've tried using a normal wrench and a breaker bar. I tried by going through the passenger wheel well, but I just don't have enough clearance to make it budge. I've even removed my sway bar but still no luck.

x2 on the breaker bar. I needed some extra leverage becuase of the tight quarters. The hinged head gets you away from other parts as well so you can feel more comfortable in leaning on the bar without fileting your knuckles on them. I hate when that happens...

You're talking about the 22mm one, right? You may need to put the truck up on a lift or tall stands so you have more room to get the leverage you need with the breaker bar. I have a lift so it was easier to get a turn on the bar under the truck.

It's the 19mm one. The one that's behind the rack if you were looking from the rear. You have to get it from the top and there's very limited clearance.

Ok, I know which one you mean. Got air tools? You may try an impact ratchet or butterfly with a universal on it and just hold it on there till it breaks it loose.

I'm getting ready to do this on my truck as well, and was wondering how everyone gets the center bolt as well...there's not really room on top of the rack to fit an impact wrench up there.....

It's all about a long lever. Hit it with some PB and use a breaker bar. If needed add a pipe to the bar.

Also try to tighten a little then loosen.

And now the obvious. Lefty loosey. Go the right way.

Reviving an old thread cause now I have another question...

I changed my rack bushings and my center bolt and nut came out. I did use my cordless impact on the nut and a wrench on the bolt to hold it. it all came out. Did I break the weld? I did notice the nut isn't a standard tall nut with a lot of surface area on the nut and did almost ruin the nut and need to replace it now so ill probably just get a flange nut and run it. But just curious if they are actually welded on.

If you got the vertical bolt AND nut off then yes, you broke the weld. I imagine this is not the end of the world, but it is one more point of vibration/movement, however slight it might be.

Yup, it all came out / off. Chalk it up to another oops I guess. I’ll get a new nut and make sure it’s tight as hell.
