98 4r with bad hesitation under acceleration

Greetings, we have a 1998 4r with 3.4L 6 with 5 speed manual, 220,000 miles
The hesitation started over the summer and I replaced the fuel filter under the drivers side frame rail. The problem went away for a month or so. Now it is back and even worse. When accelerating it hesitates between 2k and 3k rpms like it is starving for fuel.
Anybody have experience with this or know what direction to send me in would be great!

When was the last time you did plugs and wires and are you using dual electrode NGK or Denso plugs? If those are good check the coil packs, then injectors. If all that checks out, I would test cylinder compression.

I had a tundra that would do this, felt like the darn thing was coming apart if you gave it anything more then about 50% throttle, replaced the fuel filter and it was back to normal. I know you said you replaced it, did you use a toyota fuel filter assembly and is there any possibility that it could be clogged again. Sounds like its running out of fuel.

Had the same problems. Changed out the fuel injectors got refurbed ones off ebay that work awesome now. But like brian said check the coil and plug as they cost alot less than doin injectors. I ended up having two plugged injectors and 1 bad coil. Now the rig runs like no tomorrow

Is there a reason to think your fuel tank is rusty/etc?

Did it sit for an extended period of time?

Are the symptoms the exact same?

i have a 98 4runner with around 205k miles on it and mine was doing the exact same thing. Drove it hard enough one day to throw a code and it read as a misfire in cyl. 6.

Went to autozone and picked up new ngk wires (TE66) and ngk plugs... feels like a new truck and havent had a problem since.

That is where i would start just my thoughts

BUMP!! Same problem here with mine. 98 4Runner Limited (5VZ-FE) 4x4 Auto. 267,000 miles and due for a tune up ASAP. Already replaced the TPS. Bucks and jumps like the dang rear end is about to go. It does this in 4th gear only. Horrible acceleration with lots of hesitation in every gear.

Like what Brian said, plugs and wires should do the trick especially at 267k. Keep us posted and let us know what happens on the outcome.

Had the same exact problem like 2 days ago. Except the mechanic gave me an o2 sesnor and the 02 had no sensor. He replaced it with a sensor and it worked perfect. But my car wouldnt even go past 2k rpms.

Dang man, take a chill pill!!!! I was just seeing if it was what I thought it was. Plug wires are being changed right now... Well, not exactly right now because I'm on my laptop. Plugs are coming after this paycheck. Sucks being a broke college kid.

Imagine that. The plugs were wore slap out. I hopped in, enjoyed my hesitation-free acceleration, and an armadillo. It accelerates 100x better. FWIW, I asked about the hesitation deal on yotatech and they were some d*cks about my question. Thanks for not flaming guys. Oh yeah, buying plugs at the dealer is the cheapest/best way to go. 6 OEM Denso's for $20!

Resurecting this thread in hopes of it helping me.

Had similar problem, replaced plugs (they needed it, as evidenced by what the old ones looked like) but didn't do the wires.
Problem was 'solved' for a week or so, but now it's back to the same hesitation.
I'm thinking new wires. Should i get these at toyota?
Keep in mind... I am NOT a mechanic, I work more with computers. My neighbor helped me do the plugs (he IS a mechanic (diesel, but he knows what he's doing).
Suggestions for particular parts?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.
Greg

Mine is doing the same hesitation right now with 360k kms..slowing and picking up..it does. when i let go of gas pedal push again it works fine. i think i will start with plugs n wires. Weird thing is it didnt do this until i changed the O2 sensor. Did some of you change the O2 sensor and end up here with this problem.?
