If you’re in the St. George area DeRays Park St Auto is good. DeRay is a crabby son of a ***** but he definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Toyota.

Thanks all for the shop suggestions. I really like the idea of DIY, but I have too many projects going at once (house projects) and just don’t have the time to tinker like I’d want.

Found a couple guys that I’m looking to have swap the motor. The third quote to do head gasket and some appropriate valve work and replacement of parts on an engine with 260k was not worth the cost... 4K!! It’s a lot of cash to dump into a block with piston rings that will still have that much mileage. So my choice is finding the best low mileage engine to have swapped in for ~3k all said and done.

One guy’s in west valley and blasts out Toyota projects all day and is very appealing, but he’s booked into June, but will source me a motor or I can show up with a motor. So I’m debating the JDM route.
The other has a few motors sitting In his lot, one claims 15k on it, but I’m real worried what condition it’s in if it’s sat for 15 years to be that low of mileage. But he’s not a store front - word of mouth kinda guy and might also take me till June to find an open spot in his shop utah group

I’m working remotely right now so I don’t actually need a daily driver ASAP. Which kills me because it’s so prime to swap a motor myself.

Anybody here done a timing belt job and have all the specialty tools needed? I have some but if someone wanted to let me borrow/rent some I figured it’s worth a shot.

if you go swap route, i'd suggest pulling a valve cover or at very least scoping it in the filler to see how much sludge is in it before agreeing to buy. the guy who owned my 4R before me gave up on the entire truck because the OG motor blew a HG and his JDM swap was installed but turned out to be a chocolate factory. Its all in my build but i ended up having to rebuild the OG motor from the block up.

Whatsup y’all this is my first post on here. I’m from southern Utah but I’m currently stationed in Seattle, plan on going back in the next couple years. I bought a ‘98 with 250k miles and I love her, named her scout. I love hearing about all the other Utahns going at it on their trails and after reading some of this thread I’m glad to see there’s a recent revival! Let’s keep it going

Should have it in the shop next weekend to flip the motor out. Chose a transplant form a tundra with pretty damn low mileage. Oil was new on the dipstick, probably sat 10 years, crispy clean under the hood, even the brake fluid looked new. Was a roll over being towed behind an RV. Pretty excited, I think it’s been over a month since it gave out down in Virgin. Limped back with a cylinder 3 miss fire. Had been sipping coolant for a little over a year, but only rough on the first 10 sec warming up. Knew it was coming.

Really miss the option to drive it. The female’s RAV4 doesn’t quite cut it on the bike trips.

Ya'll might see me driving around Northern Utah County! Looking for some locals to link up with. I'm in Lehi, just passed the Point of the Mountain.

03 Sport Edition V8 with a few mods.

Let's get this thread revived!
