just bought a winch yesterday . . . BATTERY QUESTION. 4runner wouldnt start
i bought myself a birthday/christmas pres yest Amazon.com: Smittybilt 98281 XRC 8 Comp Series Black Winch with Synthetic Rope and Aluminum Fairlead: Automotive
its odd how things happen sometimes. Ive had the current battery in my 4r for less than 5 months and it wouldnt crank this morn. and it has only done it when its reallly cold (like 25 deg in Charleston,SC). what kind of battery should i get since ill have the winch. I dont want to be left stranded; on or off the road.

I have the same winch and it was 19 this morning, I've had no problems starting or operating the winch with my Optima Yellow Top. I also have a large system and no need for a capacitor. I've used these batts in all my cars including my high compression motors with high torque starters, fuel pumps and e-fans. They've always performed well for me and are worth the price.

Optima Yellow Top(even though some feel they aren't the same quality as before)
Sears Die Hard Platinum(their high end Gel Cell)
Odyssey Gel Cell
Since you are going to be running a winch you will want something that can Deep Cycle. Although I have a Red Top and figure I should be fine.

Have you checked all your connections? Is it making any noise when you crank it over? A few more details about whats going on could help us out a little better. Might be an alternator issue. Take your battery to get checked out, if it's done for then you know the reason. If it is your battery, get a new one obviously.. however, I think optimas are over rated unless you can find one for cheap.

Did you install the winch already? It sounds like you somehow drained the battery. Like ARK said, check your connections.
If you have already installed the winch, check the draw when it is off to make sure it isn't defective.

this is without the winch installed.
it clicks once when the key is turned. the lights dont dim at all, and there are no signs that the batt is dead. i didnt have time to pull ou the multi-meter this morning to test what was working with. gonna do that when i get home. i havent touched my connections since the battery was put in (i let the guy at advance do it cause its right next to my office). so maybe i will just check/tighten up the connecs and test the voltage of the battery before starting up the vehicle. crappy batts suck. i needed one quick-like, so i didnt spend an arm and a leg. i think it was about 100$.

If it is a loud click and the lights don't dim then it really sounds like the Starter Contacts are going bad instead of the battery.

Thanks pikeman.
