Starting issues

Well today in the morning I had to go somewhere, I went to turn on my car and all I heard was a click, waiting couple seconds, tried again, again another click. Well then I waited about a minute and tried again, well it started to turn over sounding weird, it then turned over and it sounded as if it was still starting so i turned it off and it kept making the starting noise. In a couple of seconds it began to show the check engine light. I really don't feel it was the starter, what's wrong with it? A couple of days ago the ground cable was a little loose so I tightened it and wrapped it with electricians tape. None of the cables to the battery are loose. So I'm not sure what is going on. Kept garaged all year. Its cold outside right now, about 37 degrees.
