Thats why I ruled those out. I really have to be able to use the 4wd in the snow or ice so a lunchbox locker wouldn't work. Thats why I mean ARB or LSD are the only real choices...

Yukon should have a Zip Locker available for the 7.5 in a few more months. Its basically an ARB knockoff that is $150 cheaper. I have installed several 8" versions into customer's rigs to date with good results.

I felt the same way, snow handling was the important issue for me too. I don't think the LSD would be so bad, but I like open/open on packed snow and ice.

I've never heard of Yukon...are they an air locker like ARB?

The other 99% of the time, it's fully open so no different than stock.
What hasn't been mentioned and why I chose the ARB over the Trutrac is that the Trutrac doesn't fully lock so you run less of a risk of snapping a CV or other damage when your in those 1% of the time, hairy situations (like mentioned above). What wasn't mentioned was whenever you're in 4x4, the Trutrac has more resistance and puts more stress on the components. Yesterday for instance I was in 4LO for ~6 hours straight, but My front diff was open the entire time because I didn't need it locked for the wheeling I was doing. However, if I had a Trutrac up front, I would have been putting more stress on my components the entire time. Whether it's enough to break a CV in a day or 2 of off roading, I don't think so. But the stress it creates, especially in 4LO, over time can't be as good as running your diffs open.
|
One big problem I have recently noticed is climbing large ledges. The Trutrac won't lock up leading you to have to use more skinny pedal, to try and bump up. Which can lead to snapping CVs.
I don't think the Trutrac is really creating any more stress on the front drivetrain. You can drive with it on dry pavement and you won't feel any feedback from it. Unlike a locker. At least with the multi-mode transfer case you can.

And an open front will never beat a Trutrac up front in sand, snow, ice, or any other slick flat surface.

So maclean216 you have the trutrac too? Would you happen to remember the part number? Or perhaps where you purchased it?

I'm sorry I forgot to ask if you have the push button 4WD or not...I was reading thru the application guide and there seemed to be two part numbers...one for shift on the fly trucks and one for without...do you have that button on the shifter for 4WD?

I think its for manual hubs vs ADD. But I have push button multi-mode transfer case. ***EDIT*** That was the part number off the invoice in 2006. Not sure how accurate it really is. I would call the tech line if you had a question.

This can be overcome with light application of the brake pedal (which is pretty standard for anyone who wheels rocks in an automatic) tricking the LSD into thinking that both wheels still have traction, and sending power to both.

I am aware of that and maybe its my tires, but I am having a problem climbing steep rock ledges.

It might be the weight of the truck...there's been a few steep climbs where my buddy's XJ ran right up it, but me and my friend Mike's 4Runners has trouble.
Try airing down a little more?

Looks like I'm not the only one that has different names on different forums...hahaha! Thanks for the help. It's really confusing is all. I spoke to Summit Racing who only have the 445 part number and insist its the right one, but everybody I know who has this LSD has the 342. When I finally get the current info I'll post up! Thanks!

Today I spoke with a very informative individual at Eaton Performance, the makers of the Detroit TruTrac LSD. He says they make two TruTracs for our rigs...part numbers 911A644(which replaced part 911A342) and 911A445.
The 644 is for axle shafts that are 1.3 inches in diameter and 445 is for axles that are 1.1 inches in diameter.
So thats why I had such a hard time finding info on the 342 part number...its been discontinued, or as the man at Eaton said, superceded by 644.
Now, which axle shaft does a 4Runner use? According to Gus at Summit Racing, it uses a 1.1 inch because he says the correct part number is 911A445. Thats a good thing because it is less expensive.
So there you have it!
P.S. I also took care of the user name thing over on YT...hahaha
