I had a 92 explorer sport 2 door manual. That I miss very much. Rig was a beast on 33s.

No problem.
The 3rd member is not hard to remove and you can install the locker on a work bench and not on the floor.
That’s the exact explorer I have
With some not so slight radius arm modifications.

@MarkamisPrime
I would love to hear how you were able to get the front diff out without having to lift the transmission or engine.
Thanks!

The secret is unbolting the front diff mounts.
I did it by myself but it’s heavy so I’d rec having an extra set of hands.
A floor Jack won’t help either because it kinda needs to roll out.
Lift up so the stud comes out of the hole in the cross member then roll it forwards so that the stud can clear the top of the cross member.
And the same exact way to get it in.
You might not have to “roll” it in and out if you have help but by myself that’s way I found to be the easiest.

Last time I swapped my front diff (done it twice now) I saved a few hours by removing the rear transmission crossmember bolts. Then I used the stock jack to lift the front of the transmission about a half inch. That was all that I needed to roll the front diff out. It is a lot easier this way and saves a bunch of time/ four letter words.

That is how I had to do it.

It doesn't seem to me that they superseded one
Just received my Truetrac in the mail. Part number 911A342 on the box and 911A644 on the part itself.

Not yet. I am gathering parts. I am going to put a lift in as well as swap out the rear diff with an E-locker that I pulled. I have a few interior painting projects that I have to finish first, but hopefully by then the weather will be a little warmer to work on the 4Runner. Maybe I'll do a small write up about the install.

I'm interested in knowing how your project turns out as well. I have a 4.30 e-locked rear end and the matching 4.30 front diff waiting to install into my 2002 4runner. Just educating myself and getting mentally prepared for the install at this point.

I feel like since i'll be swapping the 4.30 gears into my front diff that i might as well put some kind of traction aid device in or i'll regret it later. Mine isn't a daily driver nor is it a rock crawler but it will see the occasional logging trail and will probably be my designated winter vehicle.

Do not do a lunchbox locker in the front if you want to keep your awd or 4hi drivability on the streets (heavy rain/snow) it’s manageable but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I am wrapping up My TrueTrac install. The pic attached is my current drive side pattern. Looking for some thoughts. I may try and move it to the center a little more. Carrier Bearing Preload is about 5 to 7 inch-pounds. Pinion + Carrier Bearing Preload is around 12.5 to 14 inch pounds

Thought I would post before I close it up for good. I have taken a lot of pics of the process so I can create a write up on a rookies approach to the install.

Pattern looks acceptable. A little more inboard would be ideal, but I think you're good with what is shown in the photos. What's your backlash at?

I didn't check the backlash yet. It is kind of a pain to set up the gauge so I was just trying to get the preload and pattern right. Now I wish I had checked it.

But I agree. I will try and get it a little more inbound.

I'm interested in your opinion on how the vehicle drives with the Trutrac up front.

I got my 4.30 locked rearend installed (and functional) along with the 4.30 front pumpkin. I decided to use my front diff as is for now, but I do have the 4.10 diff that I pulled out to tinker with.

I got my lower gears and rear locker so I'm pretty stoked about that for now, I'll save the front Trutrac for stage 2.
