Anyone got a good suggestion on removing the hub dust cover without destroying it?

WOW! i just use a small flat head and a hammer to get it start off, then you can step up to a bigger one and just go around the edge with the screw driver and pry it off. How did you manage to do that?

That's pretty much what I was doing, but it wasn't budging.
Eventually I put the screw driver through the cap.
Using a bigger screwdriver didn't help, especially when that one broke.
I ended up using that large pair of channel locks on it and it just got worse from there.
I'm hoping some one has a different method than the one you & I used.

Don't forget you can bring that screwdriver back to Sears for a free replacement.

Yup
Just did it yesterday. Still has the plastic tag on it & sitting on the work bench where that original pic. was taken.
Also replaced a tiny 1/4 x 9/32 combination wrench. They don't make that one any more, so they gave me one of each. Their quality has sure gone down since I bought the original. Very poor QC. Seams were not ground down before the chrome went on. Looks like kaka.

Don't feel bad , same thing happened to me , it's meant to come right off like a lid on a, paint can but after 200k mine wouldn't budge , ruined the bloody thing trying to get it off and really are you going to buy the specialized tool for this , lol, I'll buy new caps from the jy as opposed to a tool...too many tools and a waste imo...I sprayed some lube in there now it comes out easy every time, glad I'm not the only one who struggled with what seemed like a vet simple task , lol

do we know the part number for this dust cover...???????????
9 out of 10 times you will probably destroy this thing trying to get it off... especially in the rust belt areas/

Mine came off for the first time in 17 years in the rust belt using a hammer and wood chisel (old one) gently, just going around and getting it to move a little bit at a time. Went back in none the worse for wear.

Teaching a man to fish: http://www.toyodiy.com/ Make an account to see the pictures. Totally worth it.
Reverse part number look-ups, etc. too... helps when trying to find junkyard or cross-referenced parts (JDM, etc).

Using a small hammer to tap the end of an all steel butter knife (non plastic handle version) or a putty knife to get the dust cover loosened up then using a flat head or chisel to continue working the edges until it pops off has worked for me.

Never underestimate the power of penetrant and time! Kroil, PB, acetone/atf!
Dribble a few drops on there, tap the outside of the hub a bit bit a hammer to break up the dissimilar metal corrossion bondings an voila!
Remeber the hubs take a beating daily and see most of the road and trail crap you ain't going to break a hub from beating on it, but that thin stamped cap is weak.
