Weird sound when I start the 4R
For a minute or two when i start the 4R in the morning there is a weird wooshing or fan blowing air sound. It does it first thing in the morning and i noticed it the other day after spending a few hours in the mall. Anyone else have this or know what it is?

Yep, it's your fan clutch working the way it's supposed to.

This is my first vehicle that is RWD and has a fan clutch. So what is it doing? Why run the fan for a minute first thing in the morning?

i believe, by the way, that the fan clutch maintains engine temperature by engaging or disengaging the cooling fan... on start up, its probably just getting its bearings.

Thanks!
Yeah, when I was shopping for a 4R the most important option was the sport package. I NEEDED the hood scoop. I found a couple that had hood scoops but didn't have running boards or fender flares, they looked weird. I had never seen a 4R equiped like that. I was hoping to find a silver one, but i found this one on special at a dealer and couldn't pass it up.

I am currently in the market for a new runner, after mine was totaled by some idiot. I have found what seems to be an awesome deal, an 02 sport edition, black, leather, cd, fender flares and everything, only 54k miles for 18,980. What do you think about that? Here is the link

fyi price info
about a month ago I found a bad azz looking black on black 2002 4Runner sport hood, fenders, runing boards, roof rack, full front brush grill, V6 , 4X4 for $17,500 - he kind of went up and down on price depending when you called.
It had about 55K miles. In Iowa. I could of got it for $17K.
I also found one about same thing in silver or metallic beige? no brush guards, in Dallas area for about same price with 75K miles.
I ended up having to pay cash so I bought a very nice burgundy 2000 4Runner SR5, 4X4, V6, tow package, runing boards, sun roof, etc, 106K miles for $10,895 in IN.
To compare - the same or similar 2000 model here in so calif was like $14,500 on up.

The fan clutch is controlled by the viscosity of the fluid inside it. When the truck sits, the fluid thickens, so when the engine is started, the fan turns at high speed until the fluid thins a bit, then the fan slows down, and becomes inaudible.
