Highest mileage on '98 4R??

Hello All:

Could you share your experience related to longevity for the 3rd generation 4Rs? I have 70K miles on my '98 SR5, and am curious how many miles I can expect? Is it uncommon to approach 200K miles with careful maintenance?

Thanks for your comments................Idaho

From what I have read, 250,000 miles seems reasonable. There are some people on this board with more miles, but the feeling is 4Runners last a long time. I would say to look out for rust and change all the fluids regularly is the best bet to keep your 3rd generation going for a long time.

I must say 70,000 is not much mileage for a 98, I have 61,000 miles on my 2001.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have been religious about the maintenance, but am trying to "wear out" my 88 tercel before putting lots of miles on the 4R. At 185,000 miles, the tercel is underpowered but running strong.

Long live the 3rd gens!

Yea me too. I agree.

This obviously won't compare to your 3rd Gen, but 2nd Gens are safe to get to 200k, with careful maintenance, and 300 and beyond isn't something to write home about persay.

4runners are easy to keep running. change that oil, watch the fluids, and stay out of accidents and youll be just fine till well over 200K.

A friend of mine that is a mechanic, recently had a '98 T 100, in his shop because it wouldn't run, with 276,000 miles.

The timing belt had never been replaced, it appeared to be the original coolant, and the tranny (auto) appeared to have never been serviced either.

He replaced the T-belt, and it started and ran like new.

He drove it a bit, and the tranny worked flawlessly, even with the old ATF.

He still changed the ATF, and coolant however.

After seeing that, it gave me a lot more confidence in the longevity of the 3.4 V6, and Toyota's in general.

thanks guys

Excellent feedback. I was thinking that maybe the 3.4 liter engines were inferior to the 4th gen engines, due to fewer horsepower. Just wanted some reassurance that less power won't equate to a shorter lived vehicle.

Thanks all!

Even though I have the 4.0 in my 4th-gen, I'm sure the 3.4 is more reliable. The 4.0 is Toyota's first aluminum engine, so I'm guessing it'll have some problems until Toyota gets all it just right.

the 3.4 has certainly proved its worth in terms of reliability.

I have 112,000. Glad to see the life expectency is so great. I keep my oil changed regularly, but I got it with 98,000 miles so I can't really say what they did before that, but I've never had a problem.

Also, if you run your truck hard, does this maybe effect how long it might live? Something I've been wondering for a little while...

the 3.4 can handle you driving it hard, but it certainly doesnt help longevity.
