HELP! Heater control cables, how to pry them out!

My heater control, the temp blender, has skipped a few gears due to the cable being a bit stiff and me forcing it to move.

I think I might be able to fix it if I can remove the heater control unit.

However, the cables are held in place with some delicate looking clips.

Anyone know a sure fire method to remove the cables from the clips?

I have a '98 4runner with rotary AC/heater controls.
