Roof cargo box on stock roof rack hits rear hatch when opened

On my 2000 4Runner I have the stock roof rack that runs halfway the length of my roof. I've tried on various cargo boxes made by Yakima or Thule. The problem I have is that when I open my rear hatch, the stock rear spoiler thing tends to hit the back of the cargo box.

Anyone out there using the stock roof rack able to use a cargo box that doesn't hit the rear hatch when opening it all the way?

I have the same problem on the wife's Legacy wagon, and they do make shorter boxes for this reason. Check out something like this, should fit with no issues, unless you need to get skis in there, lol.

Yakima › Shop › Cargo › Skybox Series › SkyBox Pro 16 Onyx

Thanks! What's the difference between the SkyBox 16 or the SkyBox 16 Onyx? They look like they have the same specs:

but who wants a shorter box? my runner actually didn't have a roof rack so I get to drill holes in my roof and put in my own tracks. that will have Thule towers and cross bars. the GOOD thing is I got the longer tracks for that reason. so I can move my towers all the way up to the sunroof If I want.

I went with Proline tracks. only cause I had too. you could get Thule towers that fit your stock rack that are taller which would bring your cargo box up higher hoping to clear your issue.

good luck

I had the skybox pro 16 great box can fit 5 snowboards in there....the claps that clamp in the crossbars can be adjusted so you can move the box up to the front and have no issues with it hitting the hatch door.. get it I loved it but had to sell because I moved and didn't gave any where to keep it.

Just the color from what I can tell.

You had no rear hatch interference? Do you have a factory roof rack? Also do you have the factory rear spoiler thing on your rear hatch? I've attached a picture of my 4runner. Let me know if your setup was like mine.

Guys I'm considering buy a SkyBox 16 from a local guy here. Can someone with my kind of setup (see the picture in this thread) let me know if they also are using the SkyBox 16 without any rear hatch interference? Thanks guys.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but did you find an option? I am in the same situation.

Yes the SkyBox 16 works without interfering with the rear hatch.
