Both sets I have had, I've used self etching primer and a few coats of high quality stuff, and have not had problems with scratching. I also go through a lot of brush when offroading too. I would say that you would need to re-coat every 2-3 years when offroading a lot. If not, then maybe every 4-5 years.

Okay so im planning on painting my stockers soon because like everyone else my clear is peeling and it looks bad.
So my question is. Would you say one can of paint per wheel? Like one primer, one base, and one clear per wheel? Or one primer for every two wheels and one base per wheel and one clear for every two? What would most of you guys recommend? I would like to get a good thick coat and make it last so i plan to do 3-4 coats of base.
Also for a primer should i use a self-etching primer + a metal primer or would the self-etching be enough alone or just the metal primer? Or some other type of primer?
Thanks for any help.

I used about 3 to 4 cans of paint when I did mine.. for mine, I pressure washed the wheel with simple green, sanded it down and painted 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint on it.. Over the Weekend, I took mine down to Hollister and it held up pretty good..
for primer, I used the rustoleum brand and the same for the paint itself..
if you have any more questions, feel free to pm me..
good luck.

Really liking those Wrangler m/tr tires. May I ask how much they were. And I have stock wheels that came with my '97 base 2.7 liter 4wd 4runner. They are 265/70 R16. How am I able to tell whether or not I can run with larger tires? I think I might need spacers to fir anything bigger than what I have now. I see yours are 315/75 R16. Do you have spacers too?

I think they have discontinued those MT/R's. But, I could be wrong. I'm sure someone still has some stock of them...
Yeah I really liked them, I am surprised the phased them out...
Spacers? You mean lift spacers or wheel spacers? I had wheel adapters which are bolt on spacers. I believe they were 1". I did this to clear the upper a-arms.
And yes, I had a lot of lift to clear the 35's without rubbing. ;)

Discontinued?!
That is a shame, but I might get lucky and find a set.
Yes, I meant wheel spacers, not body spacers. However, How high are your body spacers anyway?
Should I get self-etching primer too before I cover my stock wheels with the color I want?

BajaRunner & prospectator - you guys have really nice taste. I especially like the wheels on BajaRunner.
Kopasz - not to hate but that Blue & Bronze looks so freaking terrible - just my opinion

You don't have to take the tires off....just use a deck of cards to keep from overspraying on your tire

I used index cards but same thing
