Longevity Report.

How long has your 3rd gen held up?
What are the common repairs needed for these to keep running?
(I am most interested in the 4x4 V6's)
Thank you.

98 SR5 4WD 3.4L 5SPD-230k nothing major other than a clutch that I know of...Oil changes are key, minor maintenance is a must just like any other car.

I live in an area that salts the roads, so rust is the most common issue I have to deal with.

I've bought two 10 year old 3rd gen 4runners and here is what I have had to do in addition to all of the regular maintenance including plugs, all fluids, etc.

1998 SR5 2.7 L, 5 speed - 4x4 (was used to tow a trailer by the previous owner, I drove it pretty hard)
Purchased in 2008 with 132,000 kms (82,500 miles). No major maintenance by previous owner, oil changed and other maintenance done routinely. It's a 4cyl so no timing belt, timing chain is good to at least 300,000 kms.
Done by previous owner:
- new clutch was installed by original owner, no explanation as to why

Done by me:
- all new shocks
- both rear lower control arms
- front brakes, twice (2nd time under warranty). Had I known about the tundra upgrade, I would have done it.
- both 02 sensors
- all U joints
- muffler, twice (2nd time under warranty) - 2nd time was due to off road damage
- all belts and ac idler pully
- rear heater radiator lines were capped after they broke when getting hit by a rock in the woods (they had rusted out and the rock finished them off)
- starter tumbler was replaced (failed on Christmas eve )
- steering rack
- power steering pump
Needs:
- rocker panels have rust holes

All that maintenance was done over the last 2.5 years and 70,000 kms. I think I had rougher luck because it was used to tow and it went from just over 10,000 kms a year to 35,000 kms a year with a fair amount of that off road.

2000 SR5 3.4 L 4x4 - purchase in Dec. with 170,000 kms (just over 100,000 miles)
Done by previous owner:
- timing belt and water pump
- front brakes

Done by me:
- muffler
- MAF sensor

Need:
- suspension is going to go within in a year, I planned replacing the suspension from the beginning
- rear bumper has rust holes

I have a 1998 T4R SR5 V-6 4x4 with an automatic transmission. I bought it with 197,000 miles on it. Now I have 250,000+ miles on it and I am running up & down the mountains of Colorado with it almost daily.

The previous owner repaired:
-changed the timing belt once.
-replaced the radiator
-flushed the transmission
-changed the front brakes
-regularly changed the oil with regular oil

Maintenance done by me;
-I replaced the power steering pump because it failed.
-I changed the front brakes once
-I changed the variable fan motor behind the radiator due to the A/C working poorly when stopped.
-The dealer replaced the rear springs due to sag even though it was not under warranty

Preventative Maintenance done by me;
-I changed to synthetic oil & I change the oil regularly (3K)
-I flushed the radiator
-I flushed the transmission fluid, changed the trany filter & put synthetic in it.
-I changed the alternator because it was starting to make a high pitch whine that only I could hear but was still working
-I changed the timing belt even though it had not broken yet.

I have heard from many that if well maintained I should get 350,000 miles out of truck easily. We will see. . .

sorry I don't have time to post all my maintenance but I am going to list it in my build thread.

The engines on these trucks will last forever but the parts will start to fail over time. Therefore by the time you hit 175k expect to replace: pretty much every part mentioned in this thread. For most owners this maintenance is just part of the deal.

I compare my truck to the other SUVs that came out in 1997: explorer, nissans, durango, tahoe, blazer .. how many of them are still even on the roads?

Good luck with your truck. Set aside $750 a year for maintenance - less if you can DIY.

Bought mine in August of 2010. Other than regular stuff such as fluids and brakes. Mine is a 1997, and after 13 years im happy to replace some of these parts because i think theyve served a good 13 years and should be considered regular maintenance at that age. The previous owners had the rear diff replaced because of rust, and the front sway bar links because they snapped. I currently have done the tundra brake swap because the 4runner ones just arent sufficient. Replaced fron diff seals and transfer case yoke seal. Replaced the rear schocks.

Wow thanks for all of that, that was very comprehensive and helpful. I see how that if you drive anything hard, its gonna want to live in the shop.

But man, I am exited to get my hands on the wheel of one. Are there any options to look for on these and or ones to avoid?

1998 245,000

I have 245,000 miles on my 1998 4Runner.

I change oil and transmission fluid every 10,000 miles with Mobil 1 and std transmission fluid.

Other routine work is brakes and timing belt.

I have replaced the rear axel bearing, the O2 sensor, the starter, and the antenna. Lots of new windshields too..That is it

I tow a 5,000 lb boat from sea level to 7200 feet regularly, and drive a lot in the snow.

Hope this helps..

My sisters 1997 Limited has 240K on it, and runs like new. The previous owner maintained it ridiculously well...she has a 6 inch thick stack of maintainence records for it.

Here's main stuff the PO did:
-Transmission flushes
-Rear axle seals
-Steering rack
-Coolant flushes
-Timing belt/water pump (x2)
-Radiator

I've bypassed the radiator with an external transmission cooler, extended the rear diff breather (it was plugged bad!) and changed the oil and trans fluid.

If she keeps it, I wouldn't be surprised to see her hit 350-400k miles with it.

Which options?

The walk away you should of gotten from my write up is I used my 4Runner hard, and it has been very reliable. I towed a lot, I drove in heavy snow. It is build like a tank.

Which options?

I would get the six, and would try to get a limited version. The limited was packed to the max.

If I was going to buy one, I would find one with the least amount of milage and the color I liked.

since it is related to this thread I suggest you see my new thread about head / gasket fail at 199k.
