you have some great write ups, really simplified the dual battery install. I know a few people running the edgestar fridge and they all love it. basically the same internals as the more expensive fridges. All i need is more money now

We just added an additional article that goes over the custom cargo area we built in our 4Runner Blue gets a bit more Junk in the Trunk. Our Plan is to drive from Seattle to Argentina starting this October, the trip will last about 18 months, so this article is all about the storage of our gear.
Thoughts? or suggestions ?

Nice work. I like your site too. What arrangements have you made for getting your vehicle from Panama into Columbia?
Regarding the new cargo area, if you haven't already planned to do so, make sure you give it a good workout before you leave. I've seen a few homemade setups fall apart after a few hours on rough corrugated roads, especially when fully loaded up. You can never make those things too strong.

We will be shipping the vehicle from Colon to Cartagena Colombia, No official arrangements just yet, but we know of a few people there that will help us set the shipping up.... Going to be fun, no doubt... depending on if you have your own container or sharing it, we are looking at $1000 or $600 for the vehicle shipping.
I know exactly what you mean with poor quality... Learned my lesson in Africa ;)
We have been testing like mad, doing fully loaded trips on as much bad road as possible... All we can do now is go ;)

First Nice site, and build. I'm also a bit jealous of your upcoming trip!
In checking out the sight i did have a question... Is there a reason you went with the ANL fuses over a circuit breaker? I used the circuit breaker with my electric fan conversion figuring if i ever had a problem I should be able to trouble shoot/repair the problem with out the need to carry around more fuses for a just in case situation.

Aditional Modification to the Battery system.
Just thought I would make an additional post on the condition of the battery install and the life of the batteries.
The modifications are holding up really well after 7000 miles through the US and Mexico, temperatures have ranged from 18 degrees to 107 on and off paved roads.
We dd however buy the [Dual Battery Monitor | http://www.nationalluna.com/dualmon.htm] from National Luna. We were worried that the life of the batteries were going south, but after installing the monitor we can safely say that they are both in Good health and that the Alternator is working really well.
If you plan on using the National Luna components as we have get the monitor, it is peace of mind.

11300 miles and Going Strong!
Another update on the battery setup. We have done just over 11300 miles and 8 countries, the battery setup is still going strong!
On a side note the fridge we have mounted in Blue is running like a champ. We have the Edgestar 43 quart fridge and in the heat that we have had on the secondary battery will last us up to two days without having the recharge.
We have met quite a few other overlanders that have run into issues with their ARb fridges. The Edgestar is worth the $450, unlike the $900 competitors out there. Check out the writeup about how we mounted the fridge here.

Hey Kobus (or anyone else that knows):
(I know this a years-old thread I'm reviving but I figured it would be better to ask here for posterity, rather than send a private email that only I would benefit from.)
I've just completed part 1 of the battery install following your guide. Thanks for that!
I'm now purchasing the cables for the second phase and I had a question. In your diagram you have the 0AWG ground wire from the inverter and the 10AWG wire from the refrigerator running all the way back to the battery negative post ground. Wouldn't it be cheaper/cleaner/safer/easier to simply ground the fridge and the inverter directly to the chassis under the rear passenger seat? E.g. Dremel off some of the body paint and bolt down the two ground lugs there?
As far as I understand, this would be equivalent to what you have in your diagram with much less wire and potentially a better ground connection to boot.
Thanks!

Hey aawolf,
What's that about hindsight? I am sure you would be OK just grounding the wires closer.
Share some photos when you are done!

Looking forward to diving into this soon. Dual batteries are burning a hole in my floor and hope to install soon.

Hey everyone, I’m new so I’m not sure how to get my questions out on this form. Please feel free to private message me if you have suggestions. I’m looking to add a battery to my 3rd gen t4r for the purpose of running a fridge, water pump and a power inverter for a electric blanket and charging devices while the engine is off , I want the inverter in the back cargo storage compartment area along with the dual battery voltage meter to track battery life . What would be the best way to do this and products I should use?
