3.4L engine .... interference or non interference type ?

I think my timing belt went out to lunch because my 97 4runner won't start anymore. I am not 100% sure that is what is wrong, but it is dead and won't even try to fire.

Does anyone know if these are interference or non interference motors?

Today is your lucky day, it is a non-interference engine which means your valves should be fine. If it has a broken timing belt, the engine should turn over really fast when you try to start it. No compression makes it spin fast.

I will say a mechanic friend of mine said he has seen a 4 valve non-interference mess up. He said the timing belt broke when it was going quite fast. Of course that would be quite rare. Good luck in figuring out what happened.

Thanks.

It doesn't sound abnormal. I had a belt go on a Honda before and I know what you mean about no compression.

I wonder if there is an ignition module that typically goes bad with these 4runners? I checked all the fuses out and they are ok.
