Rear Coils Question - Disappointed with ToyTec ultimate lift rear coils

hi all,

question for you. i installed the toytec ultimate 3" lift + 1" body lift on my '00 4r. i got the OME 891 rear coils (they were the heavier duty option for the 3") lift, and quite frankly, i am disappoint.

love the front, but the rear bottoms out extremely easy. if i've driving through small drainage indentations (in LA the streets are very concave for drainage, and when a street intersects another, often there are dips), it will hit the rubber stops pretty hard. i feel like it does this more now than with the OEM springs.

what's the deal here, is this normal? has anyone else noticed this? are there better options here? i read through the lift FAQ and got what i thought was the best option for back there, but i'm starting to think i need much heavier duty coils.

any suggestions?

I know those coils are hard. With the factory bump stops in place I really cant see how you are hitting them. Even with my long Sonoran Steel bump stops I dont bottom out.

What shocks are you running? Aren't the billies that Toytec use valved really soft?

Are you sure you're bottoming out? I've ran the 891's and I don't see how you could do it with normal driving. They ride rough so maybe you're not use to it and just think its bottoming out? Not sure

x2... are you carrying a really heavy load in the back when it bottoms out? I have the Ultimate Lift too but I got the lighter duty 890 coils and they do not bottom out very easy. Like 05 LTD mentioned you may be mistaking the 891's stiffness for bottoming out.

they're definitely bottoming out. no question about it. i know the difference between a stiff ride and hitting those stoppers. the 'thud' and and unmistakable jarring of the back end is hard to miss.

the shocks i got were the nice bilsteins with the resevoir.

also, not carrying a heavy load. just some stuff in the back, not too much.

its the shocks for sure. Even toytec doesn't recommend them for the 4runners. They are valved way too soft

Post the part number for the 5150's and we can look up the specs. That is what is bottoming out most likely.

They do have 2 valve settings for the 5150's - I have mine set to the stiffest as I am loaded up in the back. Feels super plush though, even compared to my buddies stock LC shocks (with the same 9.25 springs).

When loaded up, he softer set may bottom out... can't speak from experience though.

I have the 890's, softer than the 891's and I can only bottom them out if I jump the whole thing with a few hundred pounds in the back, and when I bottom out it is certainly not 'jarring'.

If you can bottom the 891's out with only a light load, then something is definitely wrong. Also, don't forget that those coils are designed for best performance when carrying at constant load of more than 600 lbs.

i'll have to find the part number. they're definitely the 5150 reservoir shocks though.

where is the setting on them? i didn't see anything on there to change any setting when i installed them.

also, if toytec doesn't recommend them with the 4r, why do they sell them as an upgrade to part of their "ultimate" lift kit for it?

That's really a better question for Toytec. I would just call them if I were you. They are friendly and helpful and are members of this forum too.

I have 891's and have a really hard time getting them to bottom out. Maybe if i jump the truck or smash whoops.

So let me see if I'm thinking right. There are two ways it could bottom out. A)if the spring is too soft it will compress more and the bumpstop will hit. B)if the body of the shock is too long and it prevents upward travel yet the spring is not very compressed.

Am I seeing this right?

If I am, then I would guess the shock is too long and limiting upward travel because I can't see bottoming out an 891
