trailer hitch light wiring

I have a '99 4 Runner with a factory installed trailer hitch and wiring . I have a jon boat trailer and a utility trailer . On both of my trailers , the running lights work but I get no turn signals , no brake lights , and no emergency flasher . I think the "convertor box" for the trailer lighting is not working correctly . I've been told by one local Toyota dealer that a new one costs several hundered dollars and might not even be available . Any ideas ?

I first bought the U-haul one, but didn't like the idea of cutting or tapping into wires.
so I took it back and went to Napa and got a plug and play. much easier and it works. well at least at the plug cause I have not drug my trail since I got it installed. that needs some wiring too.

Napa was like $38

look at etrailer.com I'm having problems with my "black box" that taps into my lights and I found a plug and play set for $34

Thats a good deal, and for $5 more you can get the 4 pin connector that mounts to the hitch like the factory 4 pin

Check the wiring on your trailers for shorts. I'm not sure about the factory converters, but some 6-light to 4-light converters will fry if there's a short. That might be why your current setup doesn't work. Then again it might be a loose wire.

You can test your trailer wires with jumper wires straight off the battery. Ground to ground, positive to parking, then positive to left brake/turn, positive to right right brake/turn. All three circuits should light up with out a lot of sparks. :-) With an ohmmeter each circuit should show a couple ohms resistance.
