5speed V6 owners who have regeared . . .
getting 255/85/16s (most like likely KM2s) and know that i will want to regear almost immediately due to power loss.
4.56 or 4.88 is the question.
at 70 i dont wanna be rollin out at 3500 rpms

also,
went to the yota dealer here in town (n charleston, sc) and dude tried to tell me if i didnt have spider gears then my 4runner couldnt move. he told me also that he had assembled thousands of diffs and knew everything about them . . . Almost.
seems like everytime i go there they try to make me feel like an idiot. is this a southern thing or are all you other guys getting the runaround at dealers?

Dealers give you the shaft. Every time. It would be better to find an independent shop you can trust. Talk to friends or look on the Internet for good places.

The difference between the 285's and 255's is only 0.7% (theoretically 6mm in diameter, but it'll depend on the brand). If you are happy with it now, you won't notice the 255's.
Spider gears...as in open diff vs. a spool or always locked? Yeah.
If I was going to regear, I'd do 4.88's. I thought 4.10's & 285's would be worse than they are, but it's not so bad. Last weekend we drove to 10,000ft, then wheel'd to 12,300. I don't have any power complaints...

The 5spd is more forgiving with larger tires than the auto. I also have 285's and am fine around town or on the freeway. Going up in the mountains i have to down shift sooner but I can still get around. Try it out for a while before you buy anything. If and when you do re-gear I would recommend going 4.88. The 4.56 just isn't that big of a change.

hey guys, this looks like a post that might help me as well, i just bought a 1991 4runner v6 5 speed 4x4. it has 31in all terrains. and i dont know what it is, but it feels like its just fighting to pick up speed from 1st to 3rd, it takes me for ever to get to freeway speed. motor is running strong, transmission isnt slipping. so im assuming its a gearing issue. can yall tell me what gears i should be running for 31s and what is the stock gearing on a 1991 runner.
