-------- Original Post from 07-08-2011 --------

Hey guys, figured I'd start my own build thread...

Started off by trading in my Blk/Blk 1999 Lexus SC300 with 90K miles in on this Blk/Oak 2001 Toyota 4Runner Sport with ~97K miles:

More pics of the SC3 can be found here:
hungwin.com :: gallery v2.0 :: JZZ31 Four Month Update 2009-08-04

More pics of when I first got the truck can be found here:
hungwin.com :: gallery v2.0 :: 2001 VZN185 4Runner Sport 2010-11-27

The truck was essentially a one-owner vehicle that was very well looked after. The normal signs of wear-and-tear was just not evident on the inside or outside. All VIN tags were intact and there was absolutely no sign of any paintwork.

The first purchase I made was WeatherTech DigitalFit FloorLiners, Cargo Liner, and Side Window Deflectors in the dark finish. No pics of these, figured these were more of a necessity rather than a "mod," especially with the Oak-colored interior.

Apparently the previous owner did no include a cargo cover, so I searched the Classifieds for a used one in Oak with the rounded ends to fit my 2001. I had to get a cargo cover before I threw some bass in the trunk...

I guess the previous owner was into car stereo a bit as the truck came with an Alpine iDA-X001 head unit, Alpine MRP-F250 Amp and Infinity Reference speakers front (including tweets) and rear. I have a stinking suspicion he had a box in the back that prevented him from using the cargo cover, and it was sold or lost a long time ago, and that's why the truck didn't come with a cargo cover.

I wanted a sub and amp setup that had a minimal effect on cargo space as I would be using this thing to -gasp- haul stuff!!! So after much back and forth between JL Audio's Stealthbox and their PowerWedge Max series of "powered" subwoofers, I elected to go with a JL Audio PowerWedge PWM112-WX, JL Audio SGRU-12 12" Woofer Grille, and a Vibe Quick Release Connector For Car Amplifiers that allowed for quick-disconnect of power, ground, and remote turn-on. No pics of this setup either - FAIL!!! If you guys need pics, let me know and I can post 'em up!!!

I'll get into the important stuff in the upcoming posts...

Over the winter of 2010-2011, I was doing my research/homework on these trucks and narrowed down my lift choices to ToyTec, Sonoran Steel, or a DIY amalgam of OEM/Bilstein/other products.

I ended up taking advantage of ToyTec's group buy and purchased their Ultimate Lift Kit with 600 lb silver springs and Bilstein 5100 shocks up front and OME 890's with Bilstein 5150 External Reservoir Shocks out back. I am extremely pleased with this kit and couldn't be happier with ToyTec's customer service, packaging, or overall end product. The fact that the front of the truck can be adjusted in height to accommodate different loads (i.e., front bumper, lights, extra battery, etc.) is priceless.

Can you imagine one of these things, lifted, on the Nurburgring? LOL!!!

I had been eying Wet Okole neoprene seat covers for awhile as the Oak interior is the polar opposite of the black interiors I have in my other cars. Knowing that I'd be driving the truck much more and doing more "dirty" things with it like camping, hauling wheels and tires, offroading, etc., I set out my goals for the Okoles:
  • Protect and preserve the light-colored cloth seats,
  • Increase the life of the driver's side bolsters as I knew that I'd be slipping down/out of the seats even more as the truck got higher,
    and,
  • Break up the tan fest going on with some black to go along with the WeatherTechs and obviously the 202 paint code.

I piggybacked onto Tacoma World's group buy for Wet Okoles and ordered my covers with the following options: Taupe (100) centers with "TRD Off Road" logos, storage pockets, and seat heaters for the front covers. I also added a "Gun Tote" for the driver's seat.

Install was pretty straightforward, especially since I removed the front seats. I suppose you could do it without removing the seats, but it's only four (4) bolts versus trying to work around the interior, greasy seat tracks, and various other crap that's underneath the seats.

These things have transformed the look and feel of the interior and I'm very happy with how they turned out. Normally, I'm not the type that goes after the two-tone look -the first thing that comes to mind is West Coast Customs- puke in mouth!!!

Pics below...

Went down to my buddy's parent's property down in Orange, VA and camped out in the back of the truck. I bought a Coleman SUV air mattress off of Amazon and some fiberglass window screen material from Home Depot. This was an idea I got off of the FJ Cruiser forums, you can kind of see it in the third pic on the front windows. I might do a writeup on this if I ever get around to finishing it up. We decided to do a little "four wheeling" and got stuck in grass and mud. Pretty pathetic. We had to get pulled out with a Ford tractor. Yes, a Ford.

Back in March, I ordered some Weds Adventure Mad Spoke Hase Spec wheels for the truck. I was originally going to get a set of Volk TE37Xs, but Rays raised their pricing yet again, and I'd essentially be able to purchase six or seven of the Weds for the price of four TEs. Needless to say, I went with the Weds.

The wheels arrived almost exactly three months to the day of when I placed the order and I was ecstatic. Except for one wittle mistake: I ordered five (5) wheels. Guess how many I the distributor received in the US? Four (4). I guess that's better than three (3), but how you miss an entire wheel on an order, I don't know... Needless to say, they're going to compensate me somehow for their fubar.

The wheels are 16x8.0 -25 offset (3.5" backspacing) in Light Gun Metallic.

Specs:

Center Caps - Gotta love the Engrish!!!

Lip:

Low-profile valve stems, extension, and storage container/key for the caps:

BOO

Tires. This was probably the toughest decision. It seems many guys seem to like the Goodyears and Nittos. I, of course, having to be different, wanted BFGs. I originally was going to go with the All-Terrain T/A KOs, but as with most consumer good nowadays, it seems like prices are only heading in one direction: UP!!! So, with the price difference between the All-Terrains and the Mud-Terrains being "only" $30/tire, I went with the Mud-Terrain T/A KM2s. This goes against much of what I've read on here, Yotatech, and Four Wheeler's recent test on mud tires, but I couldn't be happier.

I was going to go out on a limb and get 305s, but am glad I went with the "safe" 285/75R16s. Even with what I thought was size that required minimal mods, I had to trim a good bit of the running board endcaps and the flare extension on the front bumper.

On the way to get mounted. I was able to stack 'em three high unmounted, but they wouldn't have fit nicely with wheels inside.

Wow. Great transformation and those wheels and tires look amazing on your ride. What a difference a lift, wheels and tires can make. The color and style of those wheels are amazing too. Plans for the 5th wheel once you get it?

Oh and ditch the running boards.

I took a couple extra days off July 4th weekend to do my first thorough detail of the truck. There was some micromarring and swirl marks that I wanted to get out, and the long weekend gave me the time to do it the way I wanted to.

These are the steps I took:

Exterior:
  • Tried out my new Gilmour Foam Cannon then thoroughly washed her.
  • Claying with Sonus Ultra-Fine Detailing Clay using Clearkote's Quick Shine
  • Polish with Porter-Cable 7424XP, Lake Country CCS Smart Pads, and 3M Perfect-It III Rubbing Compound
  • Seal with 1Z Einszett Glanz Wax Hart Glanz
  • Top with Clearkote Carnauba Moose Wax
  • Wheels were cleaned with P21S Gel and sealed with 1Z
  • Tires received Meguiar's Hyper Dressing at 2:1 dilution

Interior:
  • Wash WeatherTech FloorLiners
  • Vacuum interior
  • Clean vinyl with 6:1 Woolite/Distilled Water
  • Invisible Glass/newspaper on windows

Results

And before anyone *****es, the running boards are coming off next year when I get sliders and a bumper.
