Spare tire max size

What is the largest tire that can fit underneath the 3rd Gen where the factory spare fits? I have been researching a rear bumper, and was under the impression that a 33" tire would not fit. I read a writeup on a rockware bumper that said the spare tire carrier is not necessary, and so I figured I would poll the crowds.

Has anybody put a fully aired up 285/75/16 under the truck?

A 32" will fit under the back. I think if you don't have a hitch you should be able to slide a 33" under there. Some aftermarket rear bumpers will allow for a bigger than stock tire.

I was able to get a 265 75 16 under there. It doesn't fit flush like the stock size with the hitch but it works.

I could not get my 265/75 -16 under my truck. But I believe Treadwrights are a little bigger than the average tire.

If I were you I would remove one of my street tires and give it a try (since they are 285s). IF it does crank all the way up, make sure that the tire isn't resting against the pan hard bar.
